Both the Corolla Cross and the UX have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, driver alert monitors, available all wheel drive, blind spot warning systems, rear parking sensors and rear cross-path warning.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Toyota Corolla Cross is safer than the Lexus UX:

Toyota pays for scheduled maintenance on the Corolla Cross for 1 year and 15000 miles longer than Lexus pays for maintenance for the UX (2/25000 vs. 1/10,000).

There are over 5 times as many Toyota dealers as there are Lexus dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Corolla Cross’ warranty.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Lexus vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Toyota second in reliability. Lexus is ranked third.

Both the Corolla Cross and UX have a standard automatic start/stop engine feature to stop unnecessary fuel waste and pollution at stop lights and heavy traffic. The Corolla Cross has a standard disable switch for the system, so a driver can keep the engine from shutting off when the vehicle stops temporarily.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Toyota Corolla Cross uses regular unleaded gasoline. The UX requires premium for maximum efficiency, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

The Corolla Cross FWD’s standard fuel tank has 1.8 gallons more fuel capacity than the UX Hybrid’s standard fuel tank (12.4 vs. 10.6 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Toyota Corolla Cross higher (7 out of 10) than the Lexus UX (6 to 7). This means the Corolla Cross produces up to 1.1 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the UX every 15,000 miles.

The Corolla Cross has a standard space-saver spare tire so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the UX; it requires you to depend on its run-flat tires, which limits mileage and speed before they are repaired. If a run-flat is damaged beyond repair by a road hazard your vehicle will have to be towed.

The Corolla Cross has 4.5 cubic feet more passenger volume than the UX (94.9 vs. 90.4).

The Corolla Cross has 1.4 inches more front headroom, .9 inches more front legroom and 2.7 inches more rear headroom than the UX.

The Corolla Cross has a much larger cargo volume than the UX (26.5 vs. 17.1 cubic feet).

The Corolla Cross has a 1500 lbs. towing capacity. The UX has no towing capacity.

The Corolla Cross has a much higher standard payload capacity than the UX (1160 vs. 890 lbs.).

The Corolla Cross has a much higher maximum payload capacity than the UX (1175 vs. 890 lbs.).

The power windows standard on both the Corolla Cross and the UX have locks to prevent small children from operating them. When the lock on the Corolla Cross is engaged the driver can still operate all of the windows, for instance to close one opened by a child. The UX prevents the driver from operating the other windows just as it does the other passengers.

The Toyota Corolla comes in sedan, four door hatchback and four door bodystyles; the Lexus UX isn’t available as a sedan or four door hatchback.

The Toyota Corolla outsold the Lexus UX by over 15 to one during the 2021 model year.
