To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the Outlander PHEV. But it costs extra on the XC60.

Both the Outlander PHEV and the XC60 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available around view monitors.

The Outlander PHEV comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The XC60’s 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 10,000 miles sooner.

Mitsubishi’s powertrain warranty covers the Outlander PHEV 6 years and 50,000 miles longer than Volvo covers the XC60. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the XC60 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are over 16 percent more Mitsubishi dealers than there are Volvo dealers, which makes it easier should you ever need service under the Outlander PHEV’s warranty.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Mitsubishi vehicles are better in initial quality than Volvo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Mitsubishi third in initial quality, above the industry average. With 66 more problems per 100 vehicles, Volvo is ranked 29th, below the industry average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Mitsubishi vehicles are more reliable than Volvo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Mitsubishi 13th in reliability, above the industry average. With 27 more problems per 100 vehicles, Volvo is ranked 25th.

The Outlander PHEV’s maximum driving range in pure electric mode is 24 miles, 26% further than the XC60 T8’s 19 mile range.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV uses regular unleaded gasoline. The XC60 requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV higher (7 out of 10) than the Volvo XC60 (5 to 7). This means the Outlander PHEV produces up to 8 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the XC60 every 15,000 miles.

The Outlander PHEV has a standard continuously variable transmission (CVT). With no “steps” between gears, it can keep the engine at the most efficient speed for fuel economy, or keep it at its peak horsepower indefinitely for maximum acceleration. The XC60 doesn’t offer a CVT.

The Outlander PHEV stops shorter than the XC60:

The Outlander PHEV’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 55 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the XC60’s standard 60 series tires.

The front and rear suspension of the Outlander PHEV uses coil springs for better ride, handling and control than the XC60, which uses transverse leafs springs in the rear. Coil springs compress more progressively and offer more suspension travel for a smoother ride with less bottoming out.

For better maneuverability, the Outlander PHEV’s turning circle is 1.8 feet tighter than the XC60’s (35.6 feet vs. 37.4 feet).

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Outlander PHEV’s rear seats recline. The XC60’s rear seats don’t recline.

The Outlander PHEV has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the XC60 with its rear seat up (30.4 vs. 21.6 cubic feet). The Outlander PHEV has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the XC60 with its rear seat folded (66.6 vs. 49.8 cubic feet).

The Outlander PHEV’s front and rear power windows all open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The XC60’s rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to open or close them fully.

The Outlander PHEV GT has a 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The XC60 doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.
