The Mitsubishi Mirage has a standard driver’s side knee airbag mounted low on the dashboard. The knee airbag helps prevent the driver from sliding under the seatbelts or the main frontal airbag; this keeps the driver better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. A knee airbag also helps keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Accent doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The Mirage SE’s lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane. The Accent doesn’t offer a lane departure warning system.

Both the Mirage and the Accent have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding and rearview cameras.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Mitsubishi vehicles are better in initial quality than Hyundai vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Mitsubishi third in initial quality, above the industry average. With 5 more problems per 100 vehicles, Hyundai is ranked 8th.

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Mitsubishi Mirage higher (5 out of 10) than the Hyundai Accent (3). This means the Mirage produces up to 16.5 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the Accent every 15,000 miles.

For better maneuverability, the Mirage Hatchback’s turning circle is 3.3 feet tighter than the Accent’s (30.2 feet vs. 33.5 feet). The Mirage G4’s turning circle is 2 feet tighter than the Accent’s (31.5 feet vs. 33.5 feet).

The Mitsubishi Mirage may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 500 to 650 pounds less than the Hyundai Accent.

The Mirage G4 is 3.1 inches shorter than the Accent, making the Mirage easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The Mirage has a much larger trunk with its rear seat up than the Accent (17.1 vs. 13.7 cubic feet).

The Mirage’s driver’s power window opens or closes with one touch of the window control, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths. The Accent’s standard driver’s power window switch has to be held the entire time to close it fully.

While driving with high beams on, sensitive light sensors standard on the Mirage SE detect other vehicles which could be blinded and automatically switch to low beams. The Accent doesn’t offer automatic dimming high beams.

The Mirage’s optional rear view mirror has an automatic dimming feature. This mirror can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on it, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The Accent doesn’t offer the luxury of an automatic dimming rear view mirror.

The Mitsubishi Mirage comes in sedan and station wagon bodystyles; the Hyundai Accent isn’t available as a station wagon.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Mirage is less expensive to operate than the Accent because it costs $255 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost much less on the Mirage than the Accent, including $66 less for fuel injection and $305 less for a fuel pump.

The Mitsubishi Mirage outsold the Hyundai Accent by 27% during the 2021 model year.
