Compare the2022 Land Rover Range Rover SportVS 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee

For enhanced safety, the front and middle seat shoulder belts of the Land Rover Range Rover Sport have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The Jeep Grand Cherokee doesn’t offer pretensioners for the middle seat belts.

The Range Rover Sport’s optional pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Grand Cherokee doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

Both the Range Rover Sport and Grand Cherokee have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The Range Rover Sport has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The Grand Cherokee’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the Range Rover Sport. But it costs extra on the Grand Cherokee.

The Range Rover Sport’s standard lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane and gently nudges the vehicle back towards its lane. A lane departure warning system costs extra on the Grand Cherokee.

The Range Rover Sport offers an optional Surround Camera System to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The Grand Cherokee only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

The Range Rover Sport’s optional driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Grand Cherokee doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the Range Rover Sport and the Grand Cherokee have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available blind spot warning systems and rear cross-path warning.

The Range Rover Sport comes with a full 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Grand Cherokee’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 14,000 miles sooner.

The Range Rover Sport’s corrosion warranty is 1 year longer than the Grand Cherokee’s (6 vs. 5 years).

For smoother operation, better efficiency and fewer moving parts, the engines in the Range Rover Sport have an overhead cam design, rather than the old pushrod design of the 5.7 V8 in the Grand Cherokee.

Regenerative brakes improve the Range Rover Sport’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The Grand Cherokee doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

Regardless of its engine, the Range Rover Sport’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. If the conditions warrant or the driver wishes, the system can be manually disabled at any time for the duration of a trip (not available P360/P400). Jeep only offers an automatic engine start/stop system on the Grand Cherokee V6.

The Range Rover Sport has 2.9 gallons more fuel capacity than the Grand Cherokee (27.5 vs. 24.6 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

For better stopping power the Range Rover Sport’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Grand Cherokee:

For better traction, the Range Rover Sport’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Grand Cherokee (275/40R22 vs. 265/50R20).

The Range Rover Sport’s optional tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Grand Cherokee’s optional 50 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Range Rover Sport has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the Grand Cherokee. The Range Rover Sport’s optional 22-inch wheels are larger than the 20-inch wheels optional on the Grand Cherokee.

The Range Rover Sport V8 has active sway bars, which help keep it flat and controlled during cornering, but disconnect at lower speeds to smooth the ride and offer greater off-road suspension articulation. This helps keep the tires glued to the road on-road and off. The Grand Cherokee doesn’t offer an active sway bar system.

The front and rear suspension of the Range Rover Sport uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the Grand Cherokee, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The Range Rover Sport offers an optional driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The Grand Cherokee’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Range Rover Sport is 2.7 inches wider in the front and 2.3 inches wider in the rear than on the Grand Cherokee.

The Range Rover Sport SVR handles at .87 G’s, while the Grand Cherokee Summit 4x4 pulls only .72 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Range Rover Sport SVR executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 3.6 seconds quicker than the Grand Cherokee Summit 4x4 (25.2 seconds @ .77 average G’s vs. 28.8 seconds @ .59 average G’s).

For greater off-road capability the Range Rover Sport SVR has a 2.2 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Grand Cherokee (10.8 vs. 8.6 inches), allowing the Range Rover Sport to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Range Rover Sport’s minimum ground clearance is .1 inch higher than on the Grand Cherokee Air Suspension (10.9 vs. 10.8 inches).

The Range Rover Sport offers optional seating for 7 passengers; the Grand Cherokee can only carry 5.

The Range Rover Sport has 22.6 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Grand Cherokee (128 vs. 105.4).

The Range Rover Sport has 2 inches more front shoulder room and 1.5 inches more rear shoulder room than the Grand Cherokee.

To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Range Rover Sport’s available liftgate can be opened and closed just by waving your foot, leaving your hands completely free. The Grand Cherokee doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its liftgate, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.

The Range Rover Sport’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Grand Cherokee’s (7716 vs. 6200 pounds).

The Range Rover Sport has a much higher standard payload capacity than the Grand Cherokee (1631 vs. 1180 lbs.).

The Range Rover Sport has a much higher maximum payload capacity than the Grand Cherokee (1631 vs. 1410 lbs.).

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the Grand Cherokee Limited/Trailhawk/Overland/Summit, the Range Rover Sport has standard driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position and outside mirror angle and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The Range Rover Sport offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Grand Cherokee doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The Range Rover Sport’s power parking brake sets with one touch and releases with one touch or automatically. The Grand Cherokee’s parking brake has to released manually.

The Range Rover Sport’s front and rear power windows all open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The Grand Cherokee’s rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to open or close them fully.

If the windows are left open on the Range Rover Sport the driver can close them all at the outside door handle or from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can also lower the windows the same way. The driver of the Grand Cherokee can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Range Rover Sport’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Grand Cherokee’s standard manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

Optional air conditioned the front and second row seats keep the Range Rover Sport’s passengers comfortable and take the sting out of hot leather in summer. The Grand Cherokee doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats in the rear.

The Range Rover Sport Autobiography offers optional massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the Grand Cherokee.

Insurance will cost less for the Range Rover Sport owner. The Car Book by Jack Gillis rates the Range Rover Sport with a number “1” insurance rate while the Grand Cherokee is rated higher at a number “8” rate.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Range Rover Sport is less expensive to operate than the Grand Cherokee because typical repairs cost much less on the Range Rover Sport than the Grand Cherokee, including $376 less for a muffler and $326 less for a power steering pump.

Four Wheeler performed a comparison test in its April 2016 issue and they ranked the Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR first. They ranked the Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4x4 third.

The Range Rover Sport was selected by Petersen's 4-Wheel & Off-Road magazine as their 2014 4x4 of the Year. The Grand Cherokee has never been chosen.
