Compare the2022 Land Rover Range Rover SportVS 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT

For enhanced safety, the front and middle seat shoulder belts of the Land Rover Range Rover Sport have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT doesn’t offer pretensioners for the middle seat belts.

The Range Rover Sport’s optional pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Grand Cherokee SRT doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

Both the Range Rover Sport and Grand Cherokee SRT have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The Range Rover Sport has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The Grand Cherokee SRT’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

The Range Rover Sport offers an optional Surround Camera System to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The Grand Cherokee SRT only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

The Range Rover Sport’s optional driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Grand Cherokee SRT doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the Range Rover Sport and the Grand Cherokee SRT have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, available blind spot warning systems and rear cross-path warning.

The Range Rover Sport comes with a full 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Grand Cherokee SRT’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 14,000 miles sooner.

The Range Rover Sport’s corrosion warranty is 1 year longer than the Grand Cherokee SRT’s (6 vs. 5 years).

For smoother operation, better efficiency and fewer moving parts, the engines in the Range Rover Sport have an overhead cam design, rather than the old pushrod design of the engine in the Grand Cherokee SRT.

The Range Rover Sport’s optional 5.0 supercharged V8 produces 43 more horsepower (518 vs. 475) than the Grand Cherokee SRT’s 6.4 V8. The Range Rover Sport SVR’s standard 5.0 supercharged V8 produces 100 more horsepower (575 vs. 475) and 46 lbs.-ft. more torque (516 vs. 470) than the Grand Cherokee SRT’s 6.4 V8.

As tested in Motor Trend the Range Rover Sport SVR 5.0 supercharged V8 is faster than the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT:

On the EPA test cycle the Range Rover Sport gets better mileage than the Grand Cherokee SRT:

Regenerative brakes improve the Range Rover Sport’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The Grand Cherokee SRT doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

In heavy traffic or at stop lights the Range Rover Sport’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. If the conditions warrant or the driver wishes, the system can be manually disabled at any time for the duration of a trip (not available P360/P400). The Grand Cherokee SRT doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

The Range Rover Sport has 2.9 gallons more fuel capacity than the Grand Cherokee SRT (27.5 vs. 24.6 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Land Rover Range Rover Sport higher (3 to 7 out of 10) than the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT (1). This means the Range Rover Sport produces up to 47 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the Grand Cherokee SRT every 15,000 miles.

The Range Rover Sport’s optional tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Grand Cherokee SRT’s 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Range Rover Sport offers optional 22-inch wheels. The Grand Cherokee SRT’s largest wheels are only 20-inches.

The Range Rover Sport V8 has active sway bars, which help keep it flat and controlled during cornering, but disconnect at lower speeds to smooth the ride and offer greater off-road suspension articulation. This helps keep the tires glued to the road on-road and off. The Grand Cherokee SRT doesn’t offer an active sway bar system.

The front and rear suspension of the Range Rover Sport uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the Grand Cherokee SRT, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The Range Rover Sport has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Range Rover Sport’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The Grand Cherokee SRT doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Range Rover Sport is .9 inches wider in the front and 1.6 inches wider in the rear than on the Grand Cherokee SRT.

The Range Rover Sport SVR handles at .89 G’s, while the Grand Cherokee SRT pulls only .88 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The Range Rover Sport SVR executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.2 seconds quicker than the Grand Cherokee SRT (25.2 seconds @ .77 average G’s vs. 26.4 seconds @ .71 average G’s).

For greater off-road capability the Range Rover Sport SVR has a 2.7 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Grand Cherokee SRT (10.8 vs. 8.1 inches), allowing the Range Rover Sport to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Range Rover Sport’s minimum ground clearance is 2.8 inches higher than on the Grand Cherokee SRT (10.9 vs. 8.1 inches).

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs up to about 350 pounds less than the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT.

The Range Rover Sport offers optional seating for 7 passengers; the Grand Cherokee SRT can only carry 5.

The Range Rover Sport has 22.6 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Grand Cherokee SRT (128 vs. 105.4).

The Range Rover Sport has 2 inches more front shoulder room and 1.5 inches more rear shoulder room than the Grand Cherokee SRT.

The Range Rover Sport’s cargo area is larger than the Grand Cherokee SRT’s in almost every dimension:

To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Range Rover Sport’s available liftgate can be opened and closed just by waving your foot, leaving your hands completely free. The Grand Cherokee SRT doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its liftgate, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.

The Range Rover Sport’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Grand Cherokee SRT’s (7716 vs. 7200 pounds).

The Range Rover Sport has a much higher standard payload capacity than the Grand Cherokee SRT (1631 vs. 1350 lbs.).

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the Grand Cherokee SRT, the Range Rover Sport has standard driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position and outside mirror angle and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The Range Rover Sport offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Grand Cherokee SRT doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The Range Rover Sport’s power parking brake sets with one touch and releases with one touch or automatically. The Grand Cherokee SRT’s parking brake has to released manually.

The Range Rover Sport’s front and rear power windows all open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The Grand Cherokee SRT’s rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to open or close them fully.

Optional air conditioned the front and second row seats keep the Range Rover Sport’s passengers comfortable and take the sting out of hot leather in summer. The Grand Cherokee SRT doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats in the rear.

The Range Rover Sport Autobiography offers optional massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the Grand Cherokee SRT.
