The Range Rover Sport’s optional pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Cayenne doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

Both the Range Rover Sport and Cayenne have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The Range Rover Sport has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The Cayenne’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

The Range Rover Sport’s standard lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane and gently nudges the vehicle back towards its lane. A lane departure warning system costs extra on the Cayenne.

The Range Rover Sport’s optional driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Cayenne doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the Range Rover Sport and the Cayenne have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

As tested in Car and Driver the Land Rover Range Rover Sport supercharged V8 is faster than the Porsche Cayenne turbo V6:

On the EPA test cycle the Range Rover Sport gets better mileage than the Cayenne running its gasoline engine:

The Range Rover Sport has 7.7 gallons more fuel capacity than the Cayenne E-Hybrid’s standard fuel tank (27.5 vs. 19.8 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The Range Rover Sport has 3.8 gallons more fuel capacity than the Cayenne’s standard fuel tank (27.5 vs. 23.7 gallons).

In an emergency stopping situation, many drivers don’t press the brakes with enough force to stop the vehicle in the shortest distance. The Range Rover Sport has a standard Emergency Brake Assist to detect emergency braking situations (by how hard and how quickly the brake pedal is pressed) and then automatically apply maximum braking immediately in order to help prevent a collision. The Cayenne doesn’t offer a brake assist feature.

The Range Rover Sport stops shorter than the Cayenne:

The Range Rover Sport has a standard full size spare (not available on 7-Passenger/P400e) so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the Cayenne; it requires you to depend on a temporary spare, which has mileage and speed limitations, or roadside assistance and a tow-truck.

The front and rear suspension of the Range Rover Sport uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the Cayenne, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Range Rover Sport’s wheelbase is 1.1 inches longer than on the Cayenne (115.1 inches vs. 114 inches).

The Range Rover Sport SVR handles at .89 G’s, while the Cayenne E-Hybrid pulls only .87 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

For greater off-road capability the Range Rover Sport SVR has a 2.6 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Cayenne (10.8 vs. 8.2 inches), allowing the Range Rover Sport to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Range Rover Sport’s minimum ground clearance is 1.3 inches higher than on the Cayenne Air Suspension (10.9 vs. 9.6 inches).

The Range Rover Sport offers optional seating for 7 passengers; the Cayenne can only carry 5.

The Range Rover Sport has .5 inches more front headroom, 1.6 inches more front shoulder room, .1 inches more rear headroom and 3 inches more rear shoulder room than the Cayenne.

The Range Rover Sport has a much higher standard payload capacity than the Cayenne (1631 vs. 1104 lbs.).

The Range Rover Sport has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The Cayenne doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The Range Rover Sport’s standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. An easy entry system costs extra on the Cayenne.

If the windows are left open on the Range Rover Sport the driver can close them all at the outside door handle or from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can also lower the windows the same way. The driver of the Cayenne can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Range Rover Sport has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the Cayenne only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

The Range Rover Sport offers an optional 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The Cayenne doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The Range Rover Sport was selected by Petersen's 4-Wheel & Off-Road magazine as their 2014 4x4 of the Year. The Cayenne has never been chosen.
