The Range Rover Sport’s optional driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Q8 doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the Range Rover Sport and the Q8 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, available blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Land Rover vehicles are better in initial quality than Audi vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Land Rover 26th in initial quality. With 40 more problems per 100 vehicles, Audi is ranked 32nd.

The Range Rover Sport P360’s standard 3.0 turbo/supercharged 6-cylinder hybrid produces 20 more horsepower (355 vs. 335) than the Q8’s 3.0 turbo V6 hybrid. The Range Rover Sport P400’s standard 3.0 turbo/supercharged 6-cylinder hybrid produces 60 more horsepower (395 vs. 335) and 36 lbs.-ft. more torque (405 vs. 369) than the Q8’s 3.0 turbo V6 hybrid. The Range Rover Sport’s optional 5.0 supercharged V8 produces 183 more horsepower (518 vs. 335) and 92 lbs.-ft. more torque (461 vs. 369) than the Q8’s 3.0 turbo V6 hybrid. The Range Rover Sport SVR’s standard 5.0 supercharged V8 produces 240 more horsepower (575 vs. 335) and 147 lbs.-ft. more torque (516 vs. 369) than the Q8’s 3.0 turbo V6 hybrid.

As tested in Motor Trend the Range Rover Sport SVR 5.0 supercharged V8 is faster than the Audi Q8:

The Range Rover Sport has 5 gallons more fuel capacity than the Q8 (27.5 vs. 22.5 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

For better stopping power the Range Rover Sport P400/400e/V8’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Q8:

The Range Rover Sport has a standard full size spare (not available on 7-Passenger/P400e) so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the Q8; it requires you to depend on a temporary spare, which limits mileage and speed before replacement.

The Range Rover Sport V8 has active sway bars, which help keep it flat and controlled during cornering, but disconnect at lower speeds to smooth the ride and offer greater off-road suspension articulation. This helps keep the tires glued to the road on-road and off. The Q8 doesn’t offer an active sway bar system.

The front and rear suspension of the Range Rover Sport uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the Q8, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The Range Rover Sport has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Range Rover Sport’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The Q8 doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

The Range Rover Sport SVR handles at .89 G’s, while the Q8 Prestige pulls only .83 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The Range Rover Sport SVR executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.7 seconds quicker than the Q8 Prestige (25.2 seconds @ .77 average G’s vs. 26.9 seconds @ .69 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the Range Rover Sport’s turning circle is 2.8 feet tighter than the Q8’s (40.7 feet vs. 43.5 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Range Rover Sport SVR has a 5 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Q8 (10.8 vs. 5.8 inches), allowing the Range Rover Sport to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Range Rover Sport’s minimum ground clearance is 5.1 inches higher than on the Q8 (10.9 vs. 5.8 inches).

The Range Rover Sport is 4.5 inches shorter than the Q8, making the Range Rover Sport easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The Range Rover Sport offers optional seating for 7 passengers; the Q8 can only carry 5.

The Range Rover Sport has 2.4 inches more front headroom, 1.2 inches more front shoulder room, 1 inch more rear headroom and 1 inch more rear shoulder room than the Q8.

The Range Rover Sport’s cargo area provides more volume than the Q8.

Standard Trailer Stability Assist (TSA) on the Range Rover Sport uses the Dynamic Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The Q8 doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Range Rover Sport has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the Q8 only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

Optional air conditioned the front and second row seats keep the Range Rover Sport’s passengers comfortable and take the sting out of hot leather in summer. The Q8 doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats in the rear.

The Range Rover Sport offers an optional 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The Q8 doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The Range Rover Sport’s optional Park Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The Q8 doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

The Range Rover Sport was selected by Petersen's 4-Wheel & Off-Road magazine as their 2014 4x4 of the Year. The Q8 has never been chosen.
