To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the Range Rover. But it costs extra on the XC60.

Both the Range Rover and the XC60 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, available blind spot warning systems, around view monitors, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

The Land Rover Range Rover weighs 921 to 1821 pounds more than the Volvo XC60. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the Range Rover has a standard 1600-amp battery. The XC60’s standard 800-amp battery and largest (T8) 850 amp battery aren’t as powerful.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Land Rover vehicles are better in initial quality than Volvo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Land Rover 26th in initial quality. With 10 more problems per 100 vehicles, Volvo is ranked 29th.

The Range Rover has more powerful engines than the XC60:

Regardless of its engine, regenerative brakes improve the Range Rover’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. Volvo only offers a regenerative brake system on the XC60 T8.

The Range Rover has 8.7 gallons more fuel capacity than the XC60 (27.5 vs. 18.8 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

For better traction, the Range Rover’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the XC60 (275/45R21 vs. 265/35R22).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Range Rover has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the XC60. The Range Rover’s optional 22-inch wheels are larger than the 21-inch wheels optional on the XC60.

The Range Rover offers an optional full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the XC60; it requires you to depend on a temporary spare, which has mileage and speed limitations, or roadside assistance and a tow-truck.

The Range Rover V8 has active sway bars, which help keep it flat and controlled during cornering, but disconnect at lower speeds to smooth the ride and offer greater off-road suspension articulation. This helps keep the tires glued to the road on-road and off. The XC60 doesn’t offer an active sway bar system.

The front and rear suspension of the Range Rover uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the XC60, which uses coil springs in front and transverse leafs springs in the rear. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The Range Rover’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The XC60 doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Range Rover’s wheelbase is 2.2 inches longer than on the XC60 (115 inches vs. 112.8 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Range Rover is 1.5 inches wider in the front and 1.1 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the XC60.

The Range Rover executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the XC60 B5 AWD Momentum (26.7 seconds @ .71 average G’s vs. 27.3 seconds @ .62 average G’s).

For greater off-road capability the Range Rover has a 3.4 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the XC60 w/Air Suspension (11.7 vs. 8.3 inches), allowing the Range Rover to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Range Rover’s minimum ground clearance is 3.2 inches higher than on the XC60 (11.7 vs. 8.5 inches).

The front grille of the Range Rover Diesel uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The XC60 doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The Range Rover has 12 cubic feet more passenger volume than the XC60 (115 vs. 103).

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Range Rover’s rear seats recline. The XC60’s rear seats don’t recline.

Flexibility is maximized at the game, campground or a drive-in theatre in the Range Rover SVAutobiography Long Wheelbase when its optional tailgating rear seats are deployed, allowing people to sit facing out of the tailgate. (Do not use while vehicle is in motion.) The XC60 doesn’t offer tailgating seats.

The Range Rover has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the XC60 with its rear seat up (34.5 vs. 21.6 cubic feet). The Range Rover has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the XC60 with its rear seat folded (70.9 vs. 49.8 cubic feet).

The Range Rover SVAutobiography’s optional sliding cargo floor makes loading and unloading cargo easier and safer. The XC60 doesn’t offer a sliding load floor.

The Range Rover’s cargo area is larger than the XC60’s in every dimension:

Pressing a switch automatically lowers or raises the Range Rover’s rear seats, to make changing between cargo and passengers easier. The XC60 doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

The Range Rover’s rear cargo window opens separately from the rest of the tailgate door to allow quicker loading of small packages. The XC60’s rear cargo window doesn’t open.

The Range Rover’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the XC60’s (7716 vs. 3500 pounds).

Trailer Stability Assist (TSA) is standard on the Range Rover, using the Dynamic Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. A trailer sway program costs extra on the XC60.

The engine in the Range Rover is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the XC60. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

The Range Rover’s standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel and glides the driver’s seat back, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The XC60 doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The Range Rover’s front and rear power windows all open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The XC60’s rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to open or close them fully.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Range Rover to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The XC60 doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

The Range Rover Westminster/Autobiography/SVA has standard front air conditioned seats and the Range Rover offers them optionally in the rear. This keeps the passengers comfortable and takes the sting out of hot seats in summer. The XC60 doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats in the rear.

Both the Range Rover and the XC60 offer available massaging front seats. The Range Rover also offers optional massaging rear seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging rear seats aren’t available in the XC60.

The Range Rover offers an optional 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The XC60 doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

Insurance will cost less for the Range Rover owner. The Car Book by Jack Gillis rates the Range Rover with a number “5” insurance rate while the XC60 is rated higher at a number “10” rate.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Range Rover is less expensive to operate than the XC60 because it costs $36 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost much less on the Range Rover than the XC60, including $111 less for a water pump, $24 less for a muffler, $42 less for front brake pads, $230 less for a fuel pump and $362 less for a power steering pump.
