To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the Range Rover. But it costs extra on the X5.

The Range Rover offers an optional full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the X5; it requires you to depend on a temporary spare or run-flat tires, either of which has mileage and speed limitations.

The front and rear suspension of the Range Rover uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the X5, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The Range Rover has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Range Rover’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The X5 doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

The Range Rover’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The X5 doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

The Range Rover executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the X5 xDrive40i (26.7 seconds @ .71 average G’s vs. 27.3 seconds @ .67 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the Range Rover’s turning circle is .8 feet tighter than the X5’s (40.5 feet vs. 41.3 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Range Rover has a 3 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the X5 (11.7 vs. 8.7 inches), allowing the Range Rover to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The design of the Land Rover Range Rover amounts to more than styling. The Range Rover offers aerodynamic coefficients of drag from .34 to .35 Cd (depending on bodystyle and options). That is lower than the X5 (.36 to .38). A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the Range Rover get better fuel mileage.

As tested by Car and Driver while under full throttle, the interior of the Range Rover SVAutobiography is quieter than the X5 xDrive40i (70 vs. 71 dB).

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Range Rover’s rear seats recline. The X5’s middle row seats don’t recline.

Flexibility is maximized at the game, campground or a drive-in theatre in the Range Rover SVAutobiography Long Wheelbase when its optional tailgating rear seats are deployed, allowing people to sit facing out of the tailgate. (Do not use while vehicle is in motion.) The X5 doesn’t offer tailgating seats.

The Range Rover has a larger cargo volume than the X5 with its rear seat up (34.5 vs. 33.9 cubic feet).

The Range Rover SVAutobiography’s optional sliding cargo floor makes loading and unloading cargo easier and safer. The X5 doesn’t offer a sliding load floor.

Standard Trailer Stability Assist (TSA) on the Range Rover uses the Dynamic Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The X5 doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Range Rover has a standard rear speed-sensitive intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the X5 only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

Consumer Reports rated the Range Rover’s headlight performance “Good,” a higher rating than the X5’s headlights, which were rated “Fair.”

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The Range Rover has standard headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The X5 doesn’t offer headlight washers.

Both the Range Rover and the X5 offer available massaging front seats. The Range Rover also offers optional massaging rear seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging second row seats aren’t available in the X5.

The Range Rover offers an optional 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The X5 doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Range Rover is less expensive to operate than the X5 because it costs $182 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost much less on the Range Rover than the X5, including $386 less for a water pump, $1675 less for a muffler, $76 less for front brake pads, $26 less for a starter, $78 less for front struts, $625 less for a timing belt/chain and $2010 less for a power steering pump.
