Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The Q60 Luxe/Red Sport 400 has standard Back-up Collision Intervention that uses rear sensors to monitor and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a rear collision. The 8 Series doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

The Q60 Luxe/Red Sport 400 has a standard Around View® Monitor to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The 8 Series only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

Both the Q60 and the 8 Series have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, collision warning systems, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available all-wheel drive, crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems and rear cross-path warning.

The Q60 comes with a full 4-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The 8 Series’ 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 10,000 miles sooner.

Infiniti’s powertrain warranty covers the Q60 2 years and 20,000 miles longer than BMW covers the 8 Series. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 6 years or 70,000 miles. Coverage on the 8 Series ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Infiniti vehicles are more reliable than BMW vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Infiniti 1 place higher in reliability than BMW.

The Q60 Red Sport 400’s standard 3.0 turbo V6 produces 65 more horsepower (400 vs. 335) than the 840i’s standard 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder.

On the EPA test cycle the Q60 gets better mileage than the 8 Series Coupe:

The Q60 has 2 gallons more fuel capacity than the 8 Series (20 vs. 18 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Q60 stops shorter than the 8 Series:

For better traction, the Q60 has larger standard tires than the 8 Series (255/40R19 vs. 245/35R20). The Q60 Red Sport 400’s front tires are larger than the largest tires available on the 8 Series (F:255/35R20 & R:275/30R20 vs. F:245/35R20 & R:275/30R20).

The Q60 has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The 8 Series doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Q60’s wheelbase is 1.1 inches longer than on the 8 Series (112.2 inches vs. 111.1 inches).

For better maneuverability, the Q60’s turning circle is 1.5 feet tighter than the 8 Series’ (36.7 feet vs. 38.2 feet). The Q60 AWD’s turning circle is .9 feet tighter than the 8 Series xDrive’s (38.1 feet vs. 39 feet).

The Q60 is 6.7 inches shorter than the 8 Series, making the Q60 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The design of the Infiniti Q60 amounts to more than styling. The Q60 offers aerodynamic coefficients of drag from .28 to .29 Cd (depending on bodystyle and options). That is lower than the 8 Series (.31 to .33). A more efficient exterior helps the Q60 go faster and keeps the interior quieter. It also helps the Q60 get better fuel mileage.

The Q60 Luxe/Sport/Red Sport 400 uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The 8 Series doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

The Q60 has 4.4 cubic feet more passenger volume than the 8 Series (85.4 vs. 81).

The Q60 has 1 inch more front legroom, .9 inches more rear headroom, 2.9 inches more rear legroom and 5.1 inches more rear shoulder room than the 8 Series Coupe.

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that Infiniti service is better than BMW. J.D. Power ranks Infiniti third in service department satisfaction. With a 21% lower rating, BMW is ranked 8th.

The Q60’s standard power windows have a locking feature to keep children from operating them. BMW does not offer a locking feature on the 8 Series’ power windows.

To shield the driver’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side window, the Q60 has a standard extendable sun visor. The 8 Series doesn’t offer extendable visors.

Insurance will cost less for the Q60 owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Q60 will cost $4490 less than the 8 Series over a five-year period.

The Q60 will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the Q60 will retain 42.17% to 45.27% of its original price after five years, while the 8 Series only retains 39.45% to 39.79%.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Infiniti Q60 will be $41787 to $53915 less than for the BMW 8 Series.
