Both the GV80 and Stelvio have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The GV80 has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The Stelvio’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the GV80 with its optional rear seat reminder are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The Stelvio doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The GV80 has a standard front seat center airbag, which deploys between the driver and front passenger, protecting them from injuries caused by striking each other in serious side impacts. The Stelvio doesn’t offer front seat center airbags.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The GV80 offers optional Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist-Reverse that uses rear sensors to monitor and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a rear collision. The Stelvio doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

The GV80 offers an optional Surround View Monitor to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The Stelvio only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

Both the GV80 and the Stelvio have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available all wheel drive.

The Genesis GV80 weighs 499 to 1203 pounds more than the Alfa Romeo Stelvio. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

For its top level performance in IIHS driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests, its standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system, its standard vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention system, and its standard headlight’s “Acceptable” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the GV80 its highest rating: “Top Pick Plus” for 2021, a rating granted to only 73 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Stelvio has not been tested, yet.

The GV80 comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The Stelvio’s 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 10,000 miles sooner.

Genesis’ powertrain warranty covers the GV80 6 years and 50,000 miles longer than Alfa Romeo covers the Stelvio. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the Stelvio ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

The GV80’s corrosion warranty is 2 years longer than the Stelvio’s (7 vs. 5 years).

Genesis pays for scheduled maintenance on the GV80 for 3 years and 36,000 miles. Genesis will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Alfa Romeo only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the Stelvio.

There are over 2 times as many Genesis dealers as there are Alfa Romeo dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the GV80’s warranty.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the GV80’s reliability 21 points higher than the Stelvio.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the GV80 second among upper midsize premium suvs in their 2021 Initial Quality Study. The Stelvio isn’t in the top three in its category.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are better in initial quality than Alfa Romeo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis 7th in initial quality, above the industry average. With 56 more problems per 100 vehicles, Alfa Romeo is ranked 28th, below the industry average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are more reliable than Alfa Romeo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis 8th in reliability, above the industry average. With 94 more problems per 100 vehicles, Alfa Romeo is ranked 32nd.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Genesis vehicles are more reliable than Alfa Romeo vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Genesis 24 places higher in reliability than Alfa Romeo.

The GV80’s standard 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder produces 20 more horsepower (300 vs. 280) and 5 lbs.-ft. more torque (311 vs. 306) than the Stelvio’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The GV80’s optional 3.5 turbo V6 produces 95 more horsepower (375 vs. 280) and 85 lbs.-ft. more torque (391 vs. 306) than the Stelvio’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

As tested in Consumer Reports the Genesis GV80 turbo V6 is faster than the Alfa Romeo Stelvio:

The GV80 has 4.2 gallons more fuel capacity than the Stelvio (21.1 vs. 16.9 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Genesis GV80 higher (5 out of 10) than the Alfa Romeo Stelvio (3). This means the GV80 produces up to 16.5 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the Stelvio every 15,000 miles.

For better traction, the GV80 has larger tires than the Stelvio (265/40R22 vs. 235/60R18). The GV80’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Stelvio (265/40R22 vs. 255/45R20).

The GV80’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 55 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Stelvio’s standard 60 series tires. The GV80’s optional tires have a lower 40 series profile than the Stelvio’s optional 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the GV80 has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the Stelvio. The GV80’s optional 22-inch wheels are larger than the 20-inch wheels optional on the Stelvio.

The GV80 offers an optional automatic rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Stelvio doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the GV80’s wheelbase is 5.4 inches longer than on the Stelvio (116.3 inches vs. 110.9 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the GV80 is 2.4 inches wider in the front and 1.5 inches wider in the rear than on the Stelvio.

The GV80 PRESTIGE AWD handles at .86 G’s, while the Stelvio Sprint AWD pulls only .84 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The GV80 AWD Prestige uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The Stelvio doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

The GV80 offers optional seating for 7 passengers; the Stelvio can only carry 5.

The GV80 has 42.4 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Stelvio (140 vs. 97.6).

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that Genesis service is better than Alfa Romeo. J.D. Power ranks Genesis 9th in service department satisfaction (above the industry average). With a 67% lower rating, Alfa Romeo is ranked 32nd.

The GV80 offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Stelvio doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

If the windows are left open on the GV80 the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can also lower the windows the same way. The driver of the Stelvio can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the GV80 to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Stelvio doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

When the GV80 is put in reverse, both rearview mirrors tilt from their original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirrors into their original positions. The Stelvio’s mirrors don’t automatically adjust for backing.

Optional air conditioned the front and second row seats keep the GV80’s passengers comfortable and take the sting out of hot leather in summer. The Stelvio doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

The GV80 offers optional massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the Stelvio.

The GV80’s optional Smart Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Optional Remote Smart Parking Assist will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The Stelvio doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

The GV80 was chosen as one of Car and Driver’s “Top Ten” in 2021. The Stelvio has never been a Car and Driver “Top Ten” pick.

The Genesis GV80 outsold the Alfa Romeo Stelvio by 47% during the 2021 model year.
