The Genesis G90 has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The S90 doesn’t offer a front passenger side knee airbag.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The G90 has standard Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist-Reverse that uses rear sensors to monitor and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a rear collision. The S90 doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

Both the G90 and the S90 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available all wheel drive.

For its top level performance in IIHS driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests, its standard front crash prevention system, and its headlight’s “Good” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the G90 its highest rating: “Top Pick Plus” for 2019, a rating granted to only 113 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The S90 is only a standard “Top Pick” for 2019.

The G90 comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The S90’s 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 10,000 miles sooner.

Genesis’ powertrain warranty covers the G90 6 years and 50,000 miles longer than Volvo covers the S90. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the S90 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are over 19 percent more Genesis dealers than there are Volvo dealers, which makes it easier should you ever need service under the G90’s warranty.

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the G90 has a standard 950-amp battery. The S90’s 800-amp battery isn’t as powerful.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the G90’s reliability 13 points higher than the S90.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are better in initial quality than Volvo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis 7th in initial quality, above the industry average. With 62 more problems per 100 vehicles, Volvo is ranked 29th, below the industry average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are more reliable than Volvo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis 8th in reliability, above the industry average. With 41 more problems per 100 vehicles, Volvo is ranked 25th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Genesis vehicles are more reliable than Volvo vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Genesis 13 places higher in reliability than Volvo.

The G90 3.3T’s standard 3.3 turbo V6 produces 49 more horsepower (365 vs. 316) and 81 lbs.-ft. more torque (376 vs. 295) than the S90 B6’s standard 2.0 turbo/supercharged 4-cylinder hybrid. The G90 5.0’s standard 5.0 DOHC V8 produces 20 more horsepower (420 vs. 400) than the S90 T8’s standard 2.0 turbo/supercharged 4-cylinder hybrid.

As tested in Car and Driver the G90 3.3T 3.3 turbo V6 is faster than the S90 B6 2.0 turbo/supercharged 4-cylinder:

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Genesis G90 uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended for maximum performance). The S90 requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

The G90 has 6 gallons more fuel capacity than the S90 (21.9 vs. 15.9 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

For better stopping power the G90’s brake rotors are larger than those on the S90:

For better traction and acceleration, the G90 has larger rear tires than the S90 (275/40R19 vs. 245/45R18). The G90’s rear tires are larger than the largest rear tires available on the S90 (275/40R19 vs. 255/35R20).

The G90’s 275/40R19 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the S90’s standard 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the G90 has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the S90.

The G90 has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The S90’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

The front and rear suspension of the G90 uses coil springs for better ride, handling and control than the S90, which uses transverse leafs springs in the rear. Coil springs compress more progressively and offer more suspension travel for a smoother ride with less bottoming out.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the G90’s wheelbase is 3.9 inches longer than on the S90 (124.4 inches vs. 120.5 inches).

The design of the Genesis G90 amounts to more than styling. The G90 has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .27 Cd. That is lower than the S90 (.28 to .33) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the G90 get better fuel mileage.

The G90 uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The S90 doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

Because it has more passenger and cargo room, the EPA rates the G90 a Large car, while the S90 is rated a Mid-size.

The G90 has 11.2 cubic feet more passenger volume than the S90 (113.2 vs. 102).

The G90 has 3.3 inches more front headroom, 4.1 inches more front legroom, .1 inches more front hip room, 1.6 inches more front shoulder room, .2 inches more rear headroom, .1 inches more rear hip room and 2.5 inches more rear shoulder room than the S90.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the G90 5.0’s rear seats recline. The S90’s rear seats don’t recline.

The G90 has a much larger trunk than the S90 (15.7 vs. 13.5 cubic feet).

The engine in the G90 is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the S90. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

A maintenance reminder system is standard on the G90 to save the owner time and money by calculating maintenance intervals based on odometer mileage. This takes the guesswork out of keeping your vehicle in top condition and helps it last longer. Volvo doesn’t offer a maintenance reminder on the S90.

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that Genesis service is better than Volvo. J.D. Power ranks Genesis 9th in service department satisfaction (above the industry average). With a 1% lower rating, Volvo is ranked 11th.

The G90’s standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel and glides the driver’s seat back, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The S90 doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducts detailed tests on headlights for their range both straight ahead and in curves and to be certain they don’t exceed acceptable amounts of glare to oncoming drivers. The G90’s headlights were rated “Good” by the IIHS, while the S90’s headlights are rated “Acceptable.”

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the G90 has standard extendable sun visors. The S90 doesn’t offer extendable visors.

The G90 has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the car heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the S90.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Genesis G90 has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Only the S90 T6 offers wireless charging.

The G90 is available in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. The S90 doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

The Genesis G90 outsold the Volvo 90 Series by 14 units during the 2021 model year.
