Compare the2022 Genesis G90VS 2022 BMW 7 Series

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Genesis G90 are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The BMW 7 Series doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

Both the G90 and the 7 Series have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available all wheel drive.

For its top level performance in IIHS driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests, its standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system, its standard vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention system, and its standard headlight’s “Good” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the G90 its highest rating: “Top Pick Plus” for 2021, a rating granted to only 73 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The 7 Series has not been tested, yet.

The G90 comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The 7 Series’ 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 10,000 miles sooner.

Genesis’ powertrain warranty covers the G90 6 years and 50,000 miles longer than BMW covers the 7 Series. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the 7 Series ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

The battery on the G90 is in the trunk, which protects it from hot underhood temperatures that can degrade battery life. By keeping the G90’s battery 20 to 30 degrees cooler, its life is increased by years. The 7 Series’ battery is in the hot engine compartment.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are better in initial quality than BMW vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis 7th in initial quality, above the industry average. With 18 more problems per 100 vehicles, BMW is ranked 20th, below the industry average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are more reliable than BMW vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis 8th in reliability, above the industry average. With 6 more problems per 100 vehicles, BMW is ranked 10th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Genesis vehicles are more reliable than BMW vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Genesis 7 places higher in reliability than BMW.

On the EPA test cycle the G90 gets better mileage than the 7 Series running its gasoline engine:

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Genesis G90 uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended for maximum performance). The 7 Series requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

The G90 has 9.8 gallons more fuel capacity than the 7 Series Hybrid’s standard fuel tank (21.9 vs. 12.1 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The G90 has 1.3 gallons more fuel capacity than the 7 Series’ standard fuel tank (21.9 vs. 20.6 gallons).

For better traction and acceleration, the G90 has larger rear tires than the 7 Series (275/40R19 vs. 245/50R18).

The G90’s 245/45R19 front and 275/40R19 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series front and 40 series rear profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the 7 Series’ standard 50 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the G90 has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the 7 Series.

The G90 3.3T AWD handles at .85 G’s, while the 745e xDrive pulls only .84 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

For better maneuverability, the G90’s turning circle is 2.8 feet tighter than the 740i’s (39.2 feet vs. 42 feet). The G90’s turning circle is 3.2 feet tighter than the 7 Series xDrive’s (39.2 feet vs. 42.4 feet).

The design of the Genesis G90 amounts to more than styling. The G90 has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .27 Cd. That is lower than the 7 Series (.27 to .31) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the G90 get better fuel mileage.

The G90 uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The 7 Series doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

As tested by Car and Driver while cruising at 70 MPH, the interior of the G90 3.3T is quieter than the 750i xDrive (63 vs. 66 dB).

The G90 has 1.2 inches more front headroom, 4.9 inches more front legroom and .2 inches more rear shoulder room than the 7 Series.

The front step up height for the G90 is 2.7 inches lower than the 7 Series (14” vs. 16.7”). The G90’s rear step up height is 2.5 inches lower than the 7 Series’ (14.2” vs. 16.7”).

The G90 has a much larger trunk than the 7 Series (15.7 vs. 14 cubic feet).

Insurance will cost less for the G90 owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the G90 will cost $1000 to $7595 less than the 7 Series over a five-year period.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Genesis G90 will be $12407 to $60905 less than for the BMW 7 Series.
