In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the G80 with its optional rear seat reminder are reminded to check the back seat when a sensor determines the back seat is occupied. The A4 doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The G80 has a standard front seat center airbag, which deploys between the driver and front passenger, protecting them from injuries caused by striking each other in serious side impacts. The A4 doesn’t offer front seat center airbags.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The G80 offers optional Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist-Reverse that uses rear sensors to monitor and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a rear collision. The A4 doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

The G80 has a standard blind spot warning system which uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them and moves the vehicle back into its lane. A system to reveal vehicles in the A4’s blind spot costs extra.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the G80 has a standard rear cross-path warning system, which uses sensors in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. Rear cross-path warning costs extra on the A4.

The G80’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The A4 doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the G80 and the A4 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, available all wheel drive and around view monitors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Genesis G80 is safer than the Audi A4:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Genesis G80 is safer than the Audi A4:

For its top level performance in IIHS driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests, its standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system, its standard vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention system, and its standard headlight’s “Acceptable” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the G80 its highest rating: “Top Pick Plus” for 2021, a rating granted to only 73 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The A4 is only a standard “Top Pick” for 2021.

Warranty

The G80 comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The A4’s 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 10,000 miles sooner.

Genesis’ powertrain warranty covers the G80 6 years and 50,000 miles longer than Audi covers the A4. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the A4 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

Genesis pays for scheduled maintenance on the G80 for 3 years and 36,000 miles. Genesis will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Audi only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the A4.

There are over 11 percent more Genesis dealers than there are Audi dealers, which makes it easier should you ever need service under the G80’s warranty.

Reliability

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the G80 has a standard 850-amp battery. The A4’s 420-amp battery isn’t as powerful.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the G80 first among upper midsize premium cars in their 2021 Initial Quality Study. The A4 isn’t in the top three in its category.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are better in initial quality than Audi vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis 7th in initial quality, above the industry average. With 92 more problems per 100 vehicles, Audi is ranked 32nd, below the industry average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are more reliable than Audi vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis 8th in reliability, above the industry average. With 25 more problems per 100 vehicles, Audi is ranked 20th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Genesis vehicles are more reliable than Audi vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Genesis 9 places higher in reliability than Audi.

Engine

The G80’s standard 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder produces 99 more horsepower (300 vs. 201) and 75 lbs.-ft. more torque (311 vs. 236) than the A4 40 TFSI’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid. The G80’s 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder produces 39 more horsepower (300 vs. 261) and 38 lbs.-ft. more torque (311 vs. 273) than the A4 45 TFSI’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid. The G80’s optional 3.5 turbo V6 produces 114 more horsepower (375 vs. 261) and 118 lbs.-ft. more torque (391 vs. 273) than the A4 45 TFSI’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid.

Fuel Economy and Range

The G80 2.5T’s standard fuel tank has 1.9 gallons more fuel capacity than the A4 (17.2 vs. 15.3 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The G80 3.5T’s standard fuel tank has 4 gallons more fuel capacity than the A4 (19.3 vs. 15.3 gallons).

Transmission

An eight-speed automatic is standard on the Genesis G80, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a seven-speed automatic is available for the A4.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the G80’s brake rotors are larger than those on the A4:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the G80 has larger standard tires than the A4 (245/50R18 vs. 225/50R17).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the G80 has standard 18-inch wheels. Smaller 17-inch wheels are standard on the A4. The G80’s optional 20-inch wheels are larger than the 19-inch wheels optional on the A4.

Suspension and Handling

The G80 offers an available driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads. The A4’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the G80’s wheelbase is 7.5 inches longer than on the A4 (118.5 inches vs. 111 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the G80 is 2.3 inches wider in the front and 3.7 inches wider in the rear than the track on the A4.

The G80’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (52% to 48%) than the A4’s (56% to 44%). This gives the G80 more stable handling and braking.

The G80 AWD handles at .87 G’s, while the A4 Premium pulls only .85 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The G80 AWD executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.3 seconds quicker than the A4 Premium (25.9 seconds @ .71 average G’s vs. 27.2 seconds @ .64 average G’s).

Passenger Space

Because it has more passenger and cargo room, the EPA rates the G80 a Mid-size car, while the A4 is rated a Compact.

The G80 has 11.8 cubic feet more passenger volume than the A4 (103.8 vs. 92).

The G80 has 3.8 inches more front headroom, 1.2 inches more front legroom, 2.4 inches more front shoulder room, .7 inches more rear headroom, 3 inches more rear legroom and 2.6 inches more rear shoulder room than the A4.

Cargo Capacity

The G80 has a much larger trunk than the A4 (13.1 vs. 12 cubic feet).

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier, especially for short adults, the G80 offers an optional power trunk, which opens and closes automatically by pressing a button or just by waiting momentarily behind the back bumper, completely leaving your hands free. The A4 doesn’t offer a power trunk.

Servicing Ease

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that Genesis service is better than Audi. J.D. Power ranks Genesis 9th in service department satisfaction (above the industry average). With a 2% lower rating, Audi is ranked 12th.

Ergonomics

The G80 has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The A4 doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The G80’s standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel and glides the driver’s seat back, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The A4 doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

Consumer Reports rated the G80’s headlight performance “Very Good,” a higher rating than the A4’s headlights, which were rated “Poor.”

A power rear sunshade and manual rear side window sunshades are optional in the G80 to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The A4 doesn’t offer a rear sunshade.

The G80 offers optional massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the A4.

The G80’s optional Smart Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Remote Smart Parking Assist will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The A4 Prestige’s automatic parking system requires operating the brakes and transmission to safely park and it doesn’t offer remote control parking.

Model Availability

The G80 is available in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. The A4 doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.
