For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Chevrolet Spark are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The MINI Cooper Hardtop 4 Door doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

Both the Spark and the Cooper Hardtop 4 Door have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems and rear parking sensors.

Chevrolet’s powertrain warranty covers the Spark 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than MINI covers the Cooper Hardtop 4 Door. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the Cooper Hardtop 4 Door ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are over 25 times as many Chevrolet dealers as there are MINI dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Spark’s warranty.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Spark’s reliability 14 points higher than the Cooper Hardtop 4 Door.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Spark second among city cars in their 2021 Initial Quality Study. The Cooper Hardtop 4 Door isn’t in the top three in its category.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Chevrolet vehicles are more reliable than MINI vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Chevrolet 12th in reliability, above the industry average. With 10 more problems per 100 vehicles, MINI is ranked 17th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Chevrolet vehicles are more reliable than MINI vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Chevrolet 6 places higher in reliability than MINI.

The Spark offers an optional continuously variable transmission (CVT). With no “steps” between gears, it can keep the engine at the most efficient speed for fuel economy, or keep it at its peak horsepower indefinitely for maximum acceleration. The Cooper Hardtop 4 Door doesn’t offer a CVT.

For better traction, the Spark has larger tires than the Cooper Hardtop 4 Door (185/55R15 vs. 175/65R15).

The Spark’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 55 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Cooper Hardtop 4 Door’s standard 65 series tires.

For better maneuverability, the Spark’s turning circle is 2.4 feet tighter than the Cooper Hardtop 4 Door’s (33.8 feet vs. 36.2 feet).

The Chevrolet Spark may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 600 to 650 pounds less than the MINI Cooper Hardtop 4 Door.

The Spark is 1 foot, 3.4 inches shorter than the Cooper Hardtop 4 Door, making the Spark easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces. The Spark is 1 foot, 4 inches shorter than the Cooper Hardtop 4 Door S.

The Spark is 5.2 inches narrower than the Cooper Hardtop 4 Door, making the Spark easier to handle and maneuver in traffic.

The Spark has .3 inches more front legroom, .7 inches more rear legroom and .2 inches more rear shoulder room than the Cooper Hardtop 4 Door.

The Spark Manual can be flat towed on all four wheels (dinghy towed), allowing recreational vehicle owners to bring it with them on the road. When they reach their destination, the Spark can be unhitched and driven around locally. The Cooper Hardtop 4 Door can’t be towed flat on the ground.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Spark has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the Cooper Hardtop 4 Door only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

Insurance will cost less for the Spark owner. The Car Book by Jack Gillis rates the Spark with a number “1” insurance rate while the Cooper Hardtop 4 Door is rated higher at a number “5” rate.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Spark is less expensive to operate than the Cooper Hardtop 4 Door because it costs $382 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost much less on the Spark than the Cooper Hardtop 4 Door, including $43 less for a water pump, $52 less for a muffler, $1 less for front brake pads, $296 less for a starter, $48 less for fuel injection, $164 less for a fuel pump, $177 less for front struts and $489 less for a power steering pump.
