Both the I-Pace and Rav4 Hybrid have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The I-Pace has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The Rav4 Hybrid’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

The I-Pace’s standard pretensioning seatbelts also sense rear collisions and remove slack from the seatbelts to help protect the occupants from whiplash and other injuries. The Rav4 Hybrid doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

The I-Pace has a standard blind spot warning system which uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them and moves the vehicle back into its lane. A system to reveal vehicles in the Rav4 Hybrid’s blind spot costs extra.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the I-Pace has a standard rear cross-path warning system, which uses sensors in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. Rear cross-path warning costs extra on the Rav4 Hybrid.

Both the I-Pace and the Rav4 Hybrid have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

The Jaguar I-Pace weighs 1004 to 1094 pounds more than the Toyota Rav4 Hybrid. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

Warranty

The I-Pace comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Rav4 Hybrid’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 2 years or 24,000 miles sooner.

The I-Pace’s corrosion warranty is 1 year longer than the Rav4 Hybrid’s (6 vs. 5 years).

Jaguar pays for scheduled maintenance on the I-Pace for 3 years and 35000 miles longer than Toyota pays for maintenance for the Rav4 Hybrid (5/60,000 vs. 2/25000).

Engine

The I-Pace’s standard electric motors produce 175 more horsepower (394 vs. 219) than the Rav4 Hybrid’s 2.5 DOHC 4-cylinder hybrid.

As tested in Motor Trend the Jaguar I-Pace is faster than the Toyota Rav4 Hybrid:

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the I-Pace gets better mileage than the Rav4 Hybrid (80 city/72 hwy MPGe vs. 41 city/38 hwy).

The I-Pace’s maximum EPA estimated driving range is 222 miles on a full charge. The Rav4 Hybrid can only travel about 1.6 miles before it has to start its internal combustion engine.

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Jaguar I-Pace higher (10 out of 10) than the Toyota Rav4 Hybrid (7). This means the I-Pace produces up to 11.8 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the Rav4 Hybrid every 15,000 miles.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the I-Pace’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Rav4 Hybrid:

The I-Pace’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the Rav4 Hybrid are solid, not vented.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the I-Pace has larger standard tires than the Rav4 Hybrid (245/50R20 vs. 225/65R17). The I-Pace’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Rav4 Hybrid (255/40R22 vs. 225/65R17).

The I-Pace’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 50 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Rav4 Hybrid LE/XLE’s standard 65 series tires. The I-Pace’s optional tires have a lower 40 series profile than the Rav4 Hybrid XSE/Limited’s 60 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the I-Pace has standard 20-inch wheels. Smaller 17-inch wheels are standard on the Rav4 Hybrid LE/XLE. The I-Pace’s optional 22-inch wheels are larger than the 18-inch wheels on the Rav4 Hybrid XSE/Limited.

Suspension and Handling

The front and rear suspension of the I-Pace uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the Rav4 Hybrid, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The I-Pace offers an optional driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The Rav4 Hybrid’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The I-Pace has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The I-Pace’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The Rav4 Hybrid doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

The I-Pace has vehicle speed sensitive variable-assist power steering, for low-effort parking, better control at highway speeds and during hard cornering, and a better feel of the road. The Rav4 Hybrid doesn’t offer variable-assist power steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the I-Pace’s wheelbase is 11.8 inches longer than on the Rav4 Hybrid (117.7 inches vs. 105.9 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the I-Pace is 1.7 inches wider in the front and 1.7 inches wider in the rear than on the Rav4 Hybrid.

The I-Pace’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (50% to 50%) than the Rav4 Hybrid’s (56% to 44%). This gives the I-Pace more stable handling and braking.

The I-Pace HSE handles at .93 G’s, while the Rav4 Hybrid XSE pulls only .75 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The I-Pace HSE executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 3.6 seconds quicker than the Rav4 Hybrid XSE (24.8 seconds @ .77 average G’s vs. 28.4 seconds @ .61 average G’s).

Cargo Capacity

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the I-Pace. The Rav4 Hybrid doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

Ergonomics

Unlike the driver-only memory seat in the Rav4 Hybrid Limited, the I-Pace has standard driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat and outside mirror angle and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The I-Pace has a standard heads-up display that projects speed and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Rav4 Hybrid doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The I-Pace’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Rav4 Hybrid LE’s standard fixed intermittent wipers only have one fixed delay setting, so the driver will have to manually switch them between slow and intermittent.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are optional on the I-Pace to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The Rav4 Hybrid doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The I-Pace has standard headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The Rav4 Hybrid doesn’t offer headlight washers.

The I-Pace has a standard automatic headlight on/off feature. When the ignition is on, the headlights automatically turn on at dusk and off after dawn. When the ignition turns off, the headlights turn off after a delay timed to allow you to securely get to your front door. The Rav4 Hybrid has an automatic headlight on/off feature standard only on the XLE/XSE/Limited.

The I-Pace’s standard outside mirrors include heating elements to clear off the mirrors for better visibility. Toyota charges extra for heated mirrors on the Rav4 Hybrid.

When the I-Pace is put in reverse, the passenger rearview mirror tilts from its original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirror into its original position. The Rav4 Hybrid’s mirror doesn’t automatically adjust for backing.

The I-Pace’s standard rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The Rav4 Hybrid offers an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

The I-Pace’s Park Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The Rav4 Hybrid doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Recommendations

Motor Trend performed a comparison test in its January 2019 issue and they ranked the Jaguar I-Pace HSE higher than the Toyota Rav4 Hybrid XSE.
