Both the I-Pace and Escape PHEV have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The I-Pace has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The Escape PHEV’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

The I-Pace’s standard pretensioning seatbelts also sense rear collisions and remove slack from the seatbelts to help protect the occupants from whiplash and other injuries. The Escape PHEV doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

The I-Pace has all-wheel drive to maximize traction under poor conditions, especially in ice and snow. The Escape PHEV doesn’t offer all-wheel drive.

The I-Pace offers an optional 360° Surround Camera to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The Escape PHEV only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

Both the I-Pace and the Escape PHEV have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

The Jaguar I-Pace weighs 914 pounds more than the Ford Escape PHEV. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

Warranty

The I-Pace comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Escape PHEV’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 2 years or 24,000 miles sooner.

The I-Pace’s corrosion warranty is 1 year longer than the Escape PHEV’s (6 vs. 5 years).

Jaguar pays for scheduled maintenance on the I-Pace for 5 years and 60,000 miles. Jaguar will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Ford doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the Escape PHEV.

Reliability

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the I-Pace’s reliability 15 points higher than the Escape PHEV.

Engine

The I-Pace’s standard electric motors produce 194 more horsepower (394 vs. 200) than the Escape PHEV’s 2.5 DOHC 4-cylinder hybrid.

Fuel Economy and Range

The I-Pace’s maximum EPA estimated driving range is 222 miles on a full charge. The Escape PHEV can only travel about 37 miles before it has to start its internal combustion engine.

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Jaguar I-Pace higher (10 out of 10) than the Ford Escape PHEV (7). This means the I-Pace produces up to 11.8 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the Escape PHEV every 15,000 miles.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the I-Pace’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Escape PHEV:

The I-Pace’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the Escape PHEV are solid, not vented.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the I-Pace has larger standard tires than the Escape PHEV (245/50R20 vs. 225/60R18). The I-Pace’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Escape PHEV (255/40R22 vs. 225/60R18).

The I-Pace’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 50 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Escape PHEV’s standard 60 series tires. The I-Pace’s optional tires have a lower 40 series profile than the Escape PHEV’s 60 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the I-Pace has standard 20-inch wheels. Only 18-inch wheels are available on the Escape PHEV. The I-Pace offers optional 22-inch wheels.

Suspension and Handling

The front and rear suspension of the I-Pace uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the Escape PHEV, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The I-Pace offers an optional driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The Escape PHEV’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The I-Pace has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The I-Pace’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The Escape PHEV doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the I-Pace’s wheelbase is 11 inches longer than on the Escape PHEV (117.7 inches vs. 106.7 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the I-Pace is 2.3 inches wider in the front and 3.6 inches wider in the rear than on the Escape PHEV.

Cargo Capacity

The I-Pace’s cargo area is larger than the Escape PHEV’s in almost every dimension:

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the I-Pace. The Escape PHEV doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

Towing

The I-Pace’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Escape PHEV’s (1653 vs. 1500 pounds).

Ergonomics

Unlike the driver-only memory seat and mirrors optional at extra cost in the Escape PHEV (except SE), the I-Pace has standard driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat and outside mirror angle and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The I-Pace’s front and rear power windows all open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The Escape PHEV’s standard power window switches have to be held the entire time to close them fully. Only its driver’s window opens automatically.

If the windows are left open on the I-Pace the driver can close them all from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can also lower the windows the same way. The driver of the Escape PHEV can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The I-Pace’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Escape PHEV’s standard intermittent wipers change speed with vehicle speed, but can’t turn on and off or change speed based on changing rainfall.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are optional on the I-Pace to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The Escape PHEV doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The I-Pace has standard headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The Escape PHEV doesn’t offer headlight washers.

The I-Pace’s standard outside mirrors include heating elements to clear off the mirrors for better visibility. Ford charges extra for heated mirrors on the Escape PHEV.

When the I-Pace is put in reverse, the passenger rearview mirror tilts from its original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirror into its original position. The Escape PHEV’s mirror doesn’t automatically adjust for backing.

The I-Pace’s standard rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The Escape PHEV offers an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

The I-Pace has standard heated front seats. Heated front seats cost extra on the Escape PHEV. The I-Pace also has standard heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the Escape PHEV.

Standard air-conditioned seats in the I-Pace keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The Escape PHEV doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.
