To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the I-Pace. But it costs extra on the XC60.

Both the I-Pace and the XC60 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

The Jaguar I-Pace weighs 710 to 880 pounds more than the Volvo XC60. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

The I-Pace comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The XC60’s 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 10,000 miles sooner.

Jaguar pays for scheduled maintenance on the I-Pace for 2 years and 24,000 miles longer than Volvo pays for maintenance for the XC60 (5/60,000 vs. 3/36,000).

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Jaguar vehicles are better in initial quality than Volvo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Jaguar 19th in initial quality. With 45 more problems per 100 vehicles, Volvo is ranked 29th.

The I-Pace’s electric motors produce 144 more horsepower (394 vs. 250) and 254 lbs.-ft. more torque (512 vs. 258) than the XC60 B5’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The I-Pace’s electric motors produce 78 more horsepower (394 vs. 316) and 217 lbs.-ft. more torque (512 vs. 295) than the XC60 B6’s standard 2.0 turbo/supercharged 4-cylinder. The I-Pace’s electric motors produce 40 lbs.-ft. more torque (512 vs. 472) than the XC60 T8’s standard 2.0 turbo/supercharged 4-cylinder hybrid. The I-Pace’s electric motors produce 18 lbs.-ft. more torque (512 vs. 494) than the XC60 T8 Polestar Engineered’s standard 2.0 turbo/supercharged 4-cylinder hybrid.

As tested in Motor Trend the Jaguar I-Pace is faster than the Volvo XC60:

On the EPA test cycle the I-Pace gets better mileage than the XC60 T8 running on electricity (80 city/72 hwy vs. 59 city/55 hwy MPGe).

The I-Pace’s maximum EPA estimated driving range is 222 miles on a full charge. The XC60 T8 can only travel about 19 miles before it has to start its internal combustion engine.

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Jaguar I-Pace higher (10 out of 10) than the Volvo XC60 (5 to 7). This means the I-Pace produces up to 19.8 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the XC60 every 15,000 miles.

For better traction, the I-Pace has larger standard tires than the XC60 (245/50R20 vs. 235/60R18).

The I-Pace’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 50 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the XC60’s standard 60 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the I-Pace has standard 20-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the XC60. The I-Pace’s optional 22-inch wheels are larger than the 21-inch wheels optional on the XC60.

The front and rear suspension of the I-Pace uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the XC60, which uses coil springs in front and transverse leafs springs in the rear. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the I-Pace’s wheelbase is 4.9 inches longer than on the XC60 (117.7 inches vs. 112.8 inches).

The I-Pace HSE handles at .90 G’s, while the XC60 B6 AWD Inscription pulls only .87 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The I-Pace HSE executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 2.5 seconds quicker than the XC60 B5 AWD Momentum (24.8 seconds @ .77 average G’s vs. 27.3 seconds @ .62 average G’s).

The design of the Jaguar I-Pace amounts to more than styling. The I-Pace has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .29 Cd. That is lower than the XC60 (.32) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the I-Pace get better fuel mileage.

The front grille of the I-Pace uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The XC60 doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The I-Pace has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the XC60 with its rear seat up (25.3 vs. 21.6 cubic feet). The I-Pace has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the XC60 with its rear seat folded (53.6 vs. 49.8 cubic feet).

The I-Pace’s cargo area is larger than the XC60’s in almost every dimension:

The I-Pace’s front and rear power windows all open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The XC60’s rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to open or close them fully.
