The Passat has a standard Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The G70 doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Both the Passat and the G70 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available rear parking sensors.

There are over 88 percent more Volkswagen dealers than there are Genesis dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Passat’s warranty.

The Volkswagen Passat’s engine uses a cast iron block for durability, while the G70’s engines use an aluminum block. Aluminum engine blocks are much more prone to warp and crack at high temperatures than cast iron.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Passat’s reliability 11 points higher than the G70.

On the EPA test cycle the Passat gets better mileage than the G70:

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Volkswagen Passat uses regular unleaded gasoline. The G70 requires premium for maximum efficiency, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

The Passat has 2.7 gallons more fuel capacity than the G70 (18.5 vs. 15.8 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Volkswagen Passat higher (7 out of 10) than the Genesis G70 (3). This means the Passat produces up to 24.5 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the G70 every 15,000 miles.

In an emergency stopping situation, many drivers don’t press the brakes with enough force to stop the vehicle in the shortest distance. The Passat has a standard Hydraulic Brake Assist to detect emergency braking situations (by how hard and how quickly the brake pedal is pressed) and then automatically apply maximum braking immediately in order to help prevent a collision. The G70 doesn’t offer a brake assist feature.

The Passat stops shorter than the G70:

For better traction, the Passat has larger tires than the G70 (235/45R18 vs. 225/45R18). The Passat’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the G70 (235/45R18 vs. 225/40R19).

Because it has more passenger and cargo room, the EPA rates the Passat a Mid-size car, while the G70 is rated a Compact.

The Passat has 5.1 cubic feet more passenger volume than the G70 (101 vs. 95.9).

The Passat has .6 inches more front shoulder room, .9 inches more rear headroom, 4.3 inches more rear legroom and 2.4 inches more rear shoulder room than the G70.

The Passat has a much larger trunk than the G70 (15.9 vs. 10.5 cubic feet).

If the windows are left open on the Passat the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can also lower the windows the same way. The driver of the G70 can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Passat’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The G70’s standard manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the Passat to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The G70 doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

Consumer Reports® recommends the Volkswagen Passat, based on reliability, safety and performance. The Genesis G70 isn't recommended.
