Compare the2022 Lexus RXVS 2022 Jaguar E-Pace

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Lexus RX are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Jaguar E-Pace doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

The Lexus RX has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The E-Pace doesn’t offer knee airbags.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The RX offers optional Auto Brake that uses rear sensors to monitor and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a rear collision. The E-Pace doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

The RX has a standard blind spot warning system which uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them. A system to reveal vehicles in the E-Pace’s blind spot costs extra.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the RX has a standard rear cross-path warning system, which uses sensors in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. Rear cross-path warning costs extra on the E-Pace.

Both the RX and the E-Pace have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, driver alert monitors, available all wheel drive and around view monitors.

For its top level performance in IIHS driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests, its standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system, its standard vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention system, and its available headlight’s “Acceptable” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the RX the rating of “Top Pick” for 2021, a rating granted to only 128 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The E-Pace has not been tested, yet.

Lexus’ powertrain warranty covers the RX 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Jaguar covers the E-Pace. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 6 years or 70,000 miles. Coverage on the E-Pace ends after only 5 years or 60,000 miles.

There are over 34 percent more Lexus dealers than there are Jaguar dealers, which makes it easier should you ever need service under the RX’s warranty.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the RX’s reliability 47 points higher than the E-Pace.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the RX first among midsize premium suvs in their 2021 Initial Quality Study. The E-Pace isn’t in the top three in its category.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Lexus vehicles are better in initial quality than Jaguar vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Lexus third in initial quality, above the industry average. With 21 more problems per 100 vehicles, Jaguar is ranked 19th, below the industry average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Lexus vehicles are more reliable than Jaguar vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Lexus first in reliability, above the industry average. With 105 more problems per 100 vehicles, Jaguar is ranked 31st.

The RX 350’s standard 3.5 DOHC V6 produces 49 more horsepower (295 vs. 246) than the E-Pace P250’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The RX 450h’s standard 3.5 DOHC V6 hybrid produces 12 more horsepower (308 vs. 296) than the E-Pace 300 Sport’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid.

As tested in Motor Trend the RX 350 3.5 DOHC V6 is faster than the E-Pace P250 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder:

On the EPA test cycle the RX gets better mileage than the E-Pace:

The RX’s standard fuel tank has 1.5 gallons more fuel capacity than the E-Pace (19.2 vs. 17.7 gallons).

The RX 450h has a standard continuously variable transmission (CVT). With no “steps” between gears, it can keep the engine at the most efficient speed for fuel economy, or keep it at its peak horsepower indefinitely for maximum acceleration. The E-Pace doesn’t offer a CVT.

The RX stops much shorter than the E-Pace:

The RX has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The E-Pace’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the RX’s wheelbase is 4.2 inches longer than on the E-Pace (109.8 inches vs. 105.6 inches).

The RX’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (57% to 43%) than the E-Pace’s (58.7% to 41.3%). This gives the RX more stable handling and braking.

The RX 350 executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.3 seconds quicker than the E-Pace SE (27.1 seconds @ .63 average G’s vs. 28.4 seconds @ .6 average G’s).

For greater off-road capability the RX has a greater minimum ground clearance than the E-Pace (8.2 vs. 8 inches), allowing the RX to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The RX has 1 inch more front headroom, 3.5 inches more front legroom, 1.7 inches more front shoulder room, .8 inches more rear headroom, 3.7 inches more rear legroom and 1.8 inches more rear shoulder room than the E-Pace.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the RX’s rear seats recline. The E-Pace’s rear seats don’t recline.

A control in the cargo area automatically lowers or raises the RX’s optional rear seats, to make changing between cargo and passengers easier. The E-Pace doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that Lexus service is better than Jaguar. J.D. Power ranks Lexus second in service department satisfaction. With a 42% lower rating, Jaguar is ranked 18th.

If the windows are left open on the RX the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the E-Pace can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The RX has a standard locking fuel door with a remote release located convenient to the driver. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank. The E-Pace doesn’t offer a locking fuel door.

To help drivers avoid possible obstacles, the RX offers optional cornering lights to illuminate around corners when the turn signals are activated. The E-Pace doesn’t offer cornering lights. The RX also offers optional adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the RX has standard extendable sun visors. The E-Pace doesn’t offer extendable visors.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the RX to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The E-Pace doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

The RX offers an optional 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The E-Pace doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The RX is available in both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The E-Pace doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

Consumer Reports® chose the Lexus RX as its “Top Pick,” the highest scoring vehicle in its category, based on reliability, safety and performance. The Jaguar E-Pace isn't recommended.
