Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The 1500 TRX offers optional Reverse Stop that uses rear sensors to monitor and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a rear collision. The Tundra doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

Full-time four-wheel drive is standard on the 1500 TRX. Full-time four-wheel drive gives added traction for safety in all conditions, not just off-road, like the only system available on the Tundra. Four-wheel drive of any type costs extra on the Tundra.

When descending a steep, off-road slope, the 1500 TRX Rebel’s standard Hill Descent Control allows you to creep down safely. The Tundra doesn’t offer Hill Descent Control.

The 1500 TRX offers an optional Surround View Camera to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The Tundra only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

Both the 1500 TRX and the Tundra have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems and rear cross-path warning.

The Ram 1500 TRX weighs 760 to 1260 pounds more than the Toyota Tundra. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

The Ram 1500 TRX’s engine uses a cast iron block for durability, while the Tundra’s engine uses an aluminum block. Aluminum engine blocks are much more prone to warp and crack at high temperatures than cast iron.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Ram vehicles are better in initial quality than Toyota vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Ram first in initial quality, above the industry average. With 29 more problems per 100 vehicles, Toyota is ranked 13th.

The 1500 TRX has 6.6 gallons more fuel capacity than the Tundra’s standard fuel tank (33 vs. 26.4 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The 1500 TRX has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Tundra doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

An eight-speed automatic is standard on the Ram 1500 TRX, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a six-speed automatic is available for the Tundra.

The 1500 TRX’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s at 4500 in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The Tundra doesn’t offer launch control.

For better traction, the 1500 TRX has larger tires than the Tundra (325/65R18 vs. 255/70R18). The 1500 TRX’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Tundra (325/65R18 vs. 275/65R18).

The 1500 TRX’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 65 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Tundra’s standard 70 series tires.

The Ram 1500 TRX’s wheels have 6 lugs for longer wheel bearing life, less chance of rotor warping and greater strength. The Toyota Tundra only has 5 wheel lugs per wheel.

The 1500 TRX has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The Tundra doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

The 1500 TRX has standard front and rear stabilizer bars, which help keep the 1500 TRX flat and controlled during cornering. The Tundra’s suspension doesn’t offer a rear stabilizer bar.

The front and rear suspension of the 1500 TRX uses coil springs for better ride, handling and control than the Tundra, which uses leaf springs in the rear. Coil springs compress more progressively and offer more suspension travel for a smoother ride with less bottoming out.

The 1500 TRX has a standard driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads. The Tundra’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The 1500 TRX has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The 1500 TRX’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The Tundra doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

The 1500 TRX has vehicle speed sensitive variable-assist power steering, for low-effort parking, better control at highway speeds and during hard cornering, and a better feel of the road. The Tundra doesn’t offer variable-assist power steering.

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the 1500 TRX is 6.6 inches wider in the front and 6.2 inches wider in the rear than on the Tundra.

The 1500 TRX handles at .70 G’s, while the Tundra Standard Bed Limited Double Cab 4x4 pulls only .67 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The 1500 TRX executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 2.2 seconds quicker than the Tundra Short Bed TRD Pro CrewMax 4x4 (28.4 seconds @ .61 average G’s vs. 30.6 seconds @ .53 average G’s).

For greater off-road capability the 1500 TRX has a 1.4 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Tundra Short Bed CrewMax (11.8 vs. 10.4 inches), allowing the 1500 TRX to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The 1500 TRX’s minimum ground clearance is 1.2 inches higher than on the Tundra Standard Bed Double Cab (11.8 vs. 10.6 inches).

The 1500 TRX has an all welded cargo box to eliminate possible corrosion spots and to provide better chassis stiffness. The cargo box in the Tundra is bolted through the bed to the frame with large bolts. These bolts are a prime area for corrosion to start as the normal flexing of the truck’s chassis causes them to eat through the finish; they can also snag cargo as it slides in and out.

A maintenance reminder system is standard on the 1500 TRX to save the owner time and money by calculating maintenance intervals for oil changes based on actual driving conditions. This takes the guesswork out of keeping your vehicle in top condition and helps it last longer. Toyota doesn’t offer a maintenance reminder on the Tundra.

The 1500 TRX offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Tundra doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The 1500 TRX’s power parking brake sets with one touch and releases with one touch or automatically. The Tundra’s parking brake has to released manually.

The power windows standard on both the 1500 TRX and the Tundra have locks to prevent small children from operating them. When the lock on the 1500 TRX is engaged the driver can still operate all of the windows, for instance to close one opened by a child. The Tundra prevents the driver from operating the other windows just as it does the other passengers.

The 1500 TRX’s front power windows open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The Tundra’s power window switches have to be held the entire time to close them fully. Only its driver’s window opens automatically. The Tundra’s optional windows’ rear windows don’t close automatically.

The 1500 TRX’s power window, power lock, power mirror and cruise control switches are lit from behind, making them plainly visible and easier to operate at night. The Tundra’s power lock, power mirror and cruise control switches are unlit, making them difficult to find at night and operate safely.

The 1500 TRX’s standard speed-sensitive wipers speed up when the vehicle does, so that the driver doesn’t have to continually adjust the speed of the wipers. The Tundra SR’s standard wipers have no intermittent settings at all, so the driver will have to constantly turn them on and off. The 1500 TRX’s optional wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically according to the amount of rainfall on the windshield. The Tundra SR5/Limited/Platinum/1794/TRD Pro’s manually variable intermittent wipers don’t change delay with speed.

To help drivers see further while navigating curves, the 1500 TRX has standard adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle. The Tundra doesn’t offer cornering lights.

The 1500 TRX’s power mirror controls are mounted on the armrest for easy access. The Tundra’s power mirror controls are on the dash where they are possibly hidden by the steering wheel and are awkward to manipulate.

Both the 1500 TRX and the Tundra offer available heated front seats. The 1500 TRX also offers optional heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the Tundra.

Optional air-conditioned front and rear seats keep the 1500 TRX’s passengers comfortable and take the sting out of hot leather in summer. The Tundra doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats in the rear.

On extremely cold winter days, the 1500 TRX’s optional heated steering wheel provides comfort, allowing the driver to steer safely and comfortably before the vehicle heater warms up. The Tundra doesn’t offer a heated steering wheel.

The 1500 TRX has a standard dual zone air-conditioning allows the driver and front passenger to choose two completely different temperatures so people with different temperature preferences won’t have to compromise. This makes both the driver and front passenger as comfortable as possible. Dual zone air-conditioning is only available on the Tundra TRD Pro/Limited/Platinum/1794 Edition.
