Safety

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Kia Niro EV are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Jaguar I-Pace doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the Niro EV are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The I-Pace doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The Kia Niro EV has a standard driver’s side knee airbag mounted low on the dashboard. The knee airbag helps prevent the driver from sliding under the seatbelts or the main frontal airbag; this keeps the driver better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. A knee airbag also helps keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The I-Pace doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The Niro EV has standard Active Headrests, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Active Headrests system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The I-Pace doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

The Niro EV has a standard blind spot warning system that uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them. A system to reveal vehicles in the I-Pace’s blind spot costs extra.

Both the Niro EV and the I-Pace have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available rear parking sensors.

For its top level performance in all IIHS frontal, side, rear impact and roof-crush tests, and with its optional front crash prevention system, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Niro EV the rating of “Top Pick” for 2017, a rating granted to only 216 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The I-Pace has not been tested, yet.

Warranty

Kia’s powertrain warranty covers the Niro EV 5 years and 40,000 miles longer than Jaguar covers the I-Pace. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the I-Pace ends after only 5 years or 60,000 miles.

There are over 4 times as many Kia dealers as there are Jaguar dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Niro EV’s warranty.

Reliability

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Niro EV’s reliability 29 points higher than the I-Pace.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Kia vehicles are better in initial quality than Jaguar vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Kia 6th in initial quality, above the industry average. With 18 more problems per 100 vehicles, Jaguar is ranked 19th, below the industry average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Kia vehicles are more reliable than Jaguar vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Kia third in reliability, above the industry average. With 89 more problems per 100 vehicles, Jaguar is ranked 31st.

Tires and Wheels

The Niro EV’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 55 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the I-Pace’s standard 65 series tires.

Suspension and Handling

For better maneuverability, the Niro EV’s turning circle is 4.5 feet tighter than the I-Pace’s (34.8 feet vs. 39.3 feet).

Chassis

The Kia Niro EV may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 950 to 1100 pounds less than the Jaguar I-Pace.

The Niro EV is 1 foot shorter than the I-Pace, making the Niro EV easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Passenger Space

The Niro EV has .2 inches more front headroom, .8 inches more front legroom, 1 inch more rear legroom and .5 inches more rear shoulder room than the I-Pace.

Cargo Capacity

The Niro EV has a larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the I-Pace with its rear seat folded (53 vs. 52 cubic feet).

Ergonomics

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Niro EV has a standard rear wiper. The I-Pace doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Kia Niro EV has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. The I-Pace doesn’t offer wireless personal charging.
