The Supra has a standard Pre-Collision System, which uses forward mounted sensors to warn the driver of a possible collision ahead. If the driver doesn’t react and the system determines a collision is imminent, it automatically applies the brakes at full-force in order to reduce the force of the crash or avoid it altogether. The John Cooper Works GP doesn't offer collision warning or crash mitigation brakes.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The Supra offers optional Emergency Braking that uses rear sensors to monitor and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a rear collision. The John Cooper Works GP doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

The Supra’s lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane and gently nudges the vehicle back towards its lane. The John Cooper Works GP doesn’t offer a lane departure warning system.

The Supra’s optional blind spot warning system uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them. The John Cooper Works GP doesn’t offer a system to reveal objects in the driver’s blind spots.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the Supra’s optional cross-path warning system uses sensors in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The John Cooper Works GP doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.

Both the Supra and the John Cooper Works GP have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras and available rear parking sensors.

Toyota’s powertrain warranty covers the Supra 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than MINI covers the John Cooper Works GP. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the John Cooper Works GP ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are almost 11 times as many Toyota dealers as there are MINI dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Supra’s warranty.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than MINI vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Toyota fourth in reliability, above the industry average. With 27 more problems per 100 vehicles, MINI is ranked 17th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than MINI vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Toyota second in reliability. MINI is ranked 23rd.

The Supra’s optional 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder produces 81 more horsepower (382 vs. 301) and 37 lbs.-ft. more torque (368 vs. 331) than the John Cooper Works GP’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

As tested in Car and Driver the Toyota Supra is faster than the MINI John Cooper Works GP:

In a Car and Driver race course test, the Toyota Supra 3.0 was clocked 4.5 seconds faster than the MINI John Cooper Works GP (179.3 sec. vs. 183.8 sec.).

On the EPA test cycle the Supra 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder gets better fuel mileage than the John Cooper Works GP (25 city/32 hwy vs. 24 city/30 hwy).

The Supra has 2.1 gallons more fuel capacity than the John Cooper Works GP (13.7 vs. 11.6 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Toyota Supra higher (5 to 7 out of 10) than the MINI John Cooper Works GP (3). This means the Supra produces up to 24.5 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the John Cooper Works GP every 15,000 miles.

The Supra’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the John Cooper Works GP are solid, not vented.

For better traction, the Supra has larger tires than the John Cooper Works GP (F:255/35R19 & R:275/35R19 vs. 225/35R18).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Supra 3.0 has standard 19-inch wheels. The John Cooper Works GP’s largest wheels are only 18-inches.

The Supra offers an available driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads. The John Cooper Works GP’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Supra is 2.9 inches wider in the front and 3.2 inches wider in the rear than on the John Cooper Works GP.

The Supra’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (51.5% to 48.5%) than the John Cooper Works GP’s (66% to 34%). This gives the Supra more stable handling and braking.

The Supra handles at 1.07 G’s, while the John Cooper Works GP pulls only .92 G’s of cornering force in a Road and Track skidpad test.

For better maneuverability, the Supra’s turning circle is 1.7 feet tighter than the John Cooper Works GP’s (34.1 feet vs. 35.8 feet).

As tested by Car and Driver, the interior of the Supra 2.0 is quieter than the John Cooper Works GP:

The Supra has .8 inches more front legroom, .8 inches more front hip room and 3.8 inches more front shoulder room than the John Cooper Works GP.

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the Supra. The John Cooper Works GP doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

The engine in the Supra is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the John Cooper Works GP. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

The Supra offers a remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The John Cooper Works GP doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

When two different drivers share the Supra 3.0, the memory system makes it convenient for both. Each keyless remote activates different, customized memories for the driver’s seat position, outside mirror angle, climate settings and radio stations. The John Cooper Works GP doesn’t offer a memory system.

The Supra 3.0 Premium has a standard heads-up display that projects speed and warning readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The John Cooper Works GP doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The Supra’s power parking brake sets with one touch and releases with one touch or automatically. The John Cooper Works GP has a lever-type parking brake that has to be strenuously raised to engage properly. It has to be lifted up more and a button depressed to release it.

While driving with high beams on, sensitive light sensors standard on the Supra detect other vehicles which could be blinded and automatically switch to low beams. The John Cooper Works GP doesn’t offer automatic dimming high beams.

To keep a safe, consistent following distance, the Supra offers an optional Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, which alters the speed of the vehicle without driver intervention. This allows the driver to use cruise control more safely without constantly having to disengage it when approaching slower traffic. The John Cooper Works GP doesn’t offer an adaptive cruise control.
