Compare the2022 Chrysler 300VS 2022 Volvo S90

Both the 300 and the S90 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available all wheel drive, crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rear parking sensors and rear cross-path warning.

Chrysler’s powertrain warranty covers the 300 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Volvo covers the S90. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the S90 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are almost 9 times as many Chrysler dealers as there are Volvo dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the 300’s warranty.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the 300’s reliability 56 points higher than the S90.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the 300 second among large cars in their 2021 Initial Quality Study. The S90 isn’t in the top three in its category.

As tested in Consumer Reports the Chrysler 300 V8 is faster than the S90 B6 2.0 turbo/supercharged 4-cylinder:

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the 300 V8’s fuel efficiency. The S90 doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Chrysler 300 uses regular unleaded gasoline (mid-grade octane recommended with the 5.7 V8 engine for maximum performance). The S90 requires premium, which can cost 5 to 40 cents more per gallon.

The 300 has 2.6 gallons more fuel capacity than the S90 (18.5 vs. 15.9 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The 300 has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The S90’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

The front and rear suspension of the 300 uses coil springs for better ride, handling and control than the S90, which uses transverse leafs springs in the rear. Coil springs compress more progressively and offer more suspension travel for a smoother ride with less bottoming out.

For better maneuverability, the 300’s turning circle is 1.3 feet tighter than the S90 18” wheels’ (37.4 feet vs. 38.7 feet). The 300’s turning circle is 2.6 feet tighter than the S90 19” wheels’ (37.4 feet vs. 40 feet).

Because it has more passenger and cargo room, the EPA rates the 300 a Large car, while the S90 is rated a Mid-size.

The 300 has 4.3 cubic feet more passenger volume than the S90 (106.3 vs. 102).

The 300 has .8 inches more front headroom, 2 inches more front shoulder room, .1 inches more rear headroom, 1.2 inches more rear hip room and 2.3 inches more rear shoulder room than the S90.

The 300 has a much larger trunk than the S90 (16.3 vs. 13.5 cubic feet).

The 300’s standard rear seats fold to accommodate long and bulky cargo. The S90 Luxury Package doesn’t offer folding rear seats.

The 300 has a 1000 lbs. towing capacity. The S90 has no towing capacity.

Standard Trailer Sway Mitigation on the 300 uses the Electronic Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The S90 doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

The engine in the 300 is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the S90. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

A maintenance reminder system is standard on the 300 to save the owner time and money by calculating maintenance intervals for oil changes based on actual driving conditions. This takes the guesswork out of keeping your vehicle in top condition and helps it last longer. Volvo doesn’t offer a maintenance reminder on the S90.

The 300 (except Base)’s optional easy entry system raises the steering wheel and glides the driver’s seat back when the door is unlocked or the ignition is switched off, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The S90 doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the 300 to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. Heated windshield washer nozzles cost extra on the S90.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the 300 has standard extendable sun visors. The S90 doesn’t offer extendable visors.

The 300 is available in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. The S90 doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

Insurance will cost less for the 300 owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the 300 will cost $2290 to $6180 less than the S90 over a five-year period.

The 300 will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the 300 will retain 36.68% to 39.61% of its original price after five years, while the S90 only retains 34.68% to 35.58%.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Chrysler 300 will be $16218 to $20634 less than for the Volvo S90.
