Compare the2022 Chrysler 300VS 2022 Volvo S60

Both the 300 and the S60 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available all wheel drive, crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rear parking sensors and rear cross-path warning.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Chrysler 300 is safer than the Volvo S60:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Chrysler 300 is safer than the Volvo S60:

Chrysler’s powertrain warranty covers the 300 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Volvo covers the S60. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the S60 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are almost 9 times as many Chrysler dealers as there are Volvo dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the 300’s warranty.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the 300 second among large cars in their 2021 Initial Quality Study. The S60 isn’t in the top three in its category.

As tested in Consumer Reports the Chrysler 300 V8 is faster than the S60 B5 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder:

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the 300 V8’s fuel efficiency. The S60 doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Chrysler 300 uses regular unleaded gasoline (mid-grade octane recommended with the 5.7 V8 engine for maximum performance). The S60 requires premium, which can cost 5 to 40 cents more per gallon.

The 300 has 2.6 gallons more fuel capacity than the S60 (18.5 vs. 15.9 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

For better traction, the 300’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the S60 (245/45R20 vs. 235/45R18).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the 300 offers optional 20-inch wheels. The S60’s largest wheels are only 19-inches.

The 300 has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The S60’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

The front and rear suspension of the 300 uses coil springs for better ride, handling and control than the S60, which uses transverse leafs springs in the rear. Coil springs compress more progressively and offer more suspension travel for a smoother ride with less bottoming out.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the 300’s wheelbase is 6.9 inches longer than on the S60 (120 inches vs. 113.1 inches).

As tested by Car and Driver while at idle, the interior of the 300S is quieter than the S60 Momentum (39 vs. 42 dB).

Because it has more passenger and cargo room, the EPA rates the 300 a Large car, while the S60 is rated a Compact.

The 300 has 10.3 cubic feet more passenger volume than the S60 (106.3 vs. 96).

The 300 has 1.2 inches more front headroom, .9 inches more front hip room, 3.4 inches more front shoulder room, .7 inches more rear headroom, 4.9 inches more rear legroom, 2.7 inches more rear hip room and 3.2 inches more rear shoulder room than the S60.

The 300 has a much larger trunk than the S60 (16.3 vs. 11.6 cubic feet).

A Trailer Sway Mitigation is standard on the 300, using the Electronic Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. A trailer sway program costs extra on the S60.

The engine in the 300 is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the S60. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

The 300 (except Base)’s optional easy entry system raises the steering wheel and glides the driver’s seat back when the door is unlocked or the ignition is switched off, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The S60 doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the 300 to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. Heated windshield washer nozzles cost extra on the S60.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the 300 has standard extendable sun visors. The S60 doesn’t offer extendable visors.

A power rear sunshade is optional in the 300 Touring L/S to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The S60 doesn’t offer a rear sunshade.

Insurance will cost less for the 300 owner. The Car Book by Jack Gillis rates the 300 with a number “1” insurance rate while the S60 is rated higher at a number “5” rate.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the 300 is less expensive to operate than the S60 because it costs $282 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost much less on the 300 than the S60, including $132 less for a water pump, $24 less for front brake pads, $291 less for a starter, $182 less for fuel injection and $432 less for a fuel pump.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Chrysler 300 will be $2025 to $13056 less than for the Volvo S60.
