2022 Chevrolet Tahoe
2022 Jeep Wagoneer

Safety

The Tahoe (except LS with front bench seat) has a standard front seat center airbag, which deploys between the driver and front passenger, protecting them from injuries caused by striking each other in serious side impacts. The Wagoneer doesn’t offer front seat center airbags.

Both the Tahoe and the Wagoneer have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, available all wheel drive, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

Warranty

The Tahoe’s corrosion warranty is 1 year longer than the Wagoneer’s (6 vs. 5 years).

There are over 22 percent more Chevrolet dealers than there are Jeep dealers, which makes it easier should you ever need service under the Tahoe’s warranty.

Reliability

The Tahoe has a standard “limp home system” to keep drivers from being stranded if most or all of the engine’s coolant is lost. The engine will run on only half of its cylinders at a time, reduce its power and light a warning lamp on the dashboard so the driver can get to a service station for repairs. The Wagoneer doesn’t offer a lost coolant limp home mode, so a coolant leak could strand you or seriously damage the truck’s engine.

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the Tahoe has a standard 800-amp battery (900 Diesel). The Wagoneer’s 730-amp battery isn’t as powerful.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Tahoe second among large suvs in their 2021 Initial Quality Study. The Wagoneer isn’t in the top three in its category.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Chevrolet vehicles are more reliable than Jeep vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Chevrolet 12th in reliability, above the industry average. With 26 more problems per 100 vehicles, Jeep is ranked 24th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Chevrolet vehicles are more reliable than Jeep vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Chevrolet 2 places higher in reliability than Jeep.

Engine

The Tahoe’s optional 6.2 V8 produces 5 lbs.-ft. more torque (460 vs. 455) than the Grand Wagoneer’s standard 6.4 V8.

The Tahoe’s 3.0 turbo diesel produces 56 lbs.-ft. more torque (460 vs. 404) than the Wagoneer’s standard 5.7 V8 hybrid. The Tahoe’s 3.0 turbo diesel produces 5 lbs.-ft. more torque (460 vs. 455) than the Grand Wagoneer’s standard 6.4 V8.

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Tahoe gets better mileage than the Wagoneer:

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Chevrolet Tahoe uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended with the 6.2 V8 engine for maximum performance). The Wagoneer requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

Transmission

A 10-speed automatic is standard on the Chevrolet Tahoe, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the Wagoneer.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Tahoe RST/Z71/Premier/High Country’s front brake rotors are larger than those on the Wagoneer:

14.88 inches

The Tahoe’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the Wagoneer are solid, not vented.

Tires and Wheels

The Tahoe has a standard full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the Wagoneer; it requires you to depend on a temporary spare, which limits mileage and speed before replacement.

Chassis

The Chevrolet Tahoe may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 500 pounds less than the Jeep Wagoneer.

The Tahoe is 4 inches shorter than the Wagoneer, making the Tahoe easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Passenger Space

The Tahoe offers optional seating for 9 passengers; the Wagoneer can only carry up to 8.

The Tahoe has 1 inch more front headroom and 3.6 inches more front legroom than the Wagoneer.

Cargo Capacity

The Tahoe’s cargo area provides more volume than the Wagoneer.

Payload and Towing

The Tahoe’s minimum standard towing capacity is much higher than the Wagoneer’s (7700 vs. 7180 pounds). Maximum trailer towing in the Jeep Wagoneer is only 7400 pounds. The Tahoe offers up to a 8400 lbs. towing capacity.

The Tahoe has a much higher standard payload capacity than the Wagoneer (1746 vs. 1510 lbs.).

The Tahoe has a much higher maximum payload capacity than the Wagoneer (1834 vs. 1560 lbs.).

Ergonomics

The Tahoe’s front and rear power windows all lower with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The Wagoneer’s standard power windows’ rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to open them fully.

On a hot day the Tahoe’s driver can lower all the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Wagoneer can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.
