Compare the2022 Volvo XC40VS 2022 Jaguar E-Pace

The XC40’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The E-Pace doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Volvo XC40 are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Jaguar E-Pace doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

The Volvo XC40 has a standard driver’s side knee airbag mounted low on the dashboard. The knee airbag helps prevent the driver from sliding under the seatbelts or the main frontal airbag; this keeps the driver better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. A knee airbag also helps keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The E-Pace doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The XC40 has standard Automatic Braking After Collision, which automatically apply the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The E-Pace doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The XC40 offers an optional CTA Auto Brake that use rear sensors to monitor and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a rear collision. The E-Pace doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

The XC40 has a standard blind spot warning system which uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them. A system to reveal vehicles in the E-Pace’s blind spot costs extra.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the XC40 has a standard cross-path warning system, which uses sensors in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. Cross-path warning costs extra on the E-Pace.

Both the XC40 and the E-Pace have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

For its top level performance in IIHS driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests, its standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system, its standard vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention system, and its standard headlight’s “Good” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the XC40 its highest rating: “Top Pick Plus” for 2021, a rating granted to only 63 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The E-Pace has not been tested, yet.

The XC40’s corrosion warranty is 6 years longer than the E-Pace’s (12 vs. 6 years).

There are over 55 percent more Volvo dealers than there are Jaguar dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the XC40’s warranty.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the XC40’s reliability 39 points higher than the E-Pace.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Volvo vehicles are more reliable than Jaguar vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Volvo 25th in reliability. With 43 more problems per 100 vehicles, Jaguar is ranked 31st.

As tested in Motor Trend the XC40 T5 is faster than the E-Pace P250 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder:

The XC40 has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The E-Pace doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

The XC40 stops much shorter than the E-Pace:

The XC40’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 55 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the E-Pace’s standard 60 series tires.

The XC40 T5 R-Design AWD handles at .85 G’s, while the E-Pace SE pulls only .83 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The XC40 T5 R-Design AWD executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1 seconds quicker than the E-Pace SE (27.4 seconds @ .62 average G’s vs. 28.4 seconds @ .6 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the XC40’s turning circle is .8 feet tighter than the E-Pace’s (37.4 feet vs. 38.2 feet).

For greater off-road capability the XC40 has a greater minimum ground clearance than the E-Pace (8.3 vs. 8 inches), allowing the XC40 to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The Volvo XC40 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 200 to 300 pounds less than the Jaguar E-Pace.

As tested by Car and Driver while at idle, the interior of the XC40 T5 R-Design AWD is quieter than the E-Pace SE (43 vs. 44 dB).

The XC40 has .6 inches more front headroom, .3 inches more front legroom, .6 inches more front shoulder room, .8 inches more rear headroom, 1.8 inches more rear legroom and .5 inches more rear shoulder room than the E-Pace.

The XC40’s cargo area is larger than the E-Pace’s in almost every dimension:

A control in the cargo area automatically lowers the XC40’s optional rear seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The E-Pace doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

If the windows are left open on the XC40 the driver can close them all at the outside door handle or from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can also lower the windows the same way. The driver of the E-Pace can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The XC40 has a standard locking fuel door with a remote release located convenient to the driver. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank. The E-Pace doesn’t offer a locking fuel door.

Consumer Reports rated the XC40’s headlight performance “Very Good,” a higher rating than the E-Pace’s headlights, which were rated “Fair.”

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The XC40 offers available headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The E-Pace doesn’t offer headlight washers.

To help drivers avoid possible obstacles, the XC40 has standard cornering lights to illuminate around corners when the turn signals are activated. The E-Pace doesn’t offer cornering lights. The XC40 also has standard adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle.

The XC40 R-Design/Inscription’s optional Park Assist Pilot can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The E-Pace doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

The XC40 is available in both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The E-Pace doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

Consumer Reports® recommends the Volvo XC40, based on reliability, safety and performance. The Jaguar E-Pace isn't recommended.

Motor Trend performed a comparison test in its December 2018 issue and the Volvo XC40 T5 R-Design AWD won out over the Jaguar E-Pace SE.
