The XC40 Recharge’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Aviator doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

The XC40 Recharge has a standard Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS), which use a specially designed seat to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the WHIPS allows the backrest to travel backwards to cushion the occupants and the headrests move forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. At the same time the pretensioning seatbelts fire, removing slack from the belts. The Aviator doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the XC40 Recharge. But it costs extra on the Aviator.

Both the XC40 Recharge and the Aviator have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

For its top level performance in IIHS driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests, its standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system, its standard vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention system, and its standard headlight’s “Good” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the XC40 Recharge its highest rating: “Top Safety Pick Plus” for 2022, a rating granted to only 77 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Aviator is only a standard “Top Safety Pick” for 2022.

The XC40 Recharge’s corrosion warranty is 7 years longer than the Aviator’s (12 vs. 5 years).

Volvo pays for scheduled maintenance on the XC40 Recharge for 3 years and 36,000 miles. Volvo will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Lincoln only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the Aviator.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the XC40 Recharge third among small premium suvs in their 2021 Initial Quality Study. The Aviator isn’t in the top three in its category.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Volvo vehicles are more reliable than Lincoln vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Volvo 8 places higher in reliability than Lincoln.

The XC40 Recharge’s electric motors produce 2 more horsepower (402 vs. 400) and 71 lbs.-ft. more torque (486 vs. 415) than the Aviator’s standard 3.0 turbo V6.

As tested in Motor Trend the Volvo XC40 Recharge is faster than the Lincoln Aviator:

On the EPA test cycle the XC40 Recharge gets better mileage than the Aviator Grand Touring running on electricity (92 city/79 hwy vs. 54 city/58 hwy MPGe).

The XC40 Recharge’s maximum EPA estimated driving range is 223 miles on a full charge. The Aviator Grand Touring can only travel about 21 miles before it has to start its internal combustion engine.

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Volvo XC40 Recharge higher (10 out of 10) than the Lincoln Aviator (5 to 7). This means the XC40 Recharge produces up to 19.8 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the Aviator every 15,000 miles.

The XC40 Recharge stops shorter than the Aviator:

The XC40 Recharge’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 50 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Aviator’s standard 55 series tires.

The XC40 Recharge handles at .84 G’s, while the Aviator AWD pulls only .80 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The XC40 Recharge executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the Aviator AWD (26.3 seconds @ .7 average G’s vs. 27.1 seconds @ .69 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the XC40 Recharge’s turning circle is 1.8 feet tighter than the Aviator’s (37.4 feet vs. 39.2 feet).

The XC40 Recharge is 2 feet, 1.1 inches shorter than the Aviator, making the XC40 Recharge easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The XC40 Recharge is 6.3 inches narrower than the Aviator, making the XC40 Recharge easier to handle and maneuver in traffic.

The XC40 Recharge has a much larger cargo volume than the Aviator with its rear seat up (20.1 vs. 18.3 cubic feet).

The XC40 Recharge has a standard locking charge port door with a remote release located convenient to the driver. A locking charge port prevents tampering and damage to the charging system. The Aviator doesn’t offer a locking fuel/charge port door.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are optional on the XC40 Recharge to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The Aviator doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The XC40 Recharge offers available headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The Aviator doesn’t offer headlight washers.

When the XC40 Recharge is put in reverse, both rearview mirrors tilt from their original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirrors into their original positions. The Aviator’s mirrors don’t automatically adjust for backing.

Insurance will cost less for the XC40 Recharge owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the XC40 Recharge will cost $1635 to $7410 less than the Aviator over a five-year period.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Volvo XC40 Recharge will be $1276 to $28826 less than for the Lincoln Aviator.

The Volvo XC40 outsold the Lincoln Aviator by 33% during the 2021 model year.
