Compare the2022 Volvo XC60VS 2021 Jaguar I-Pace

The XC60’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The I-Pace doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Volvo XC60 are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Jaguar I-Pace doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

The Volvo XC60 offers optional built in child booster seats. They’re more crash worthy than an added child seat because of their direct attachment to the seat. Jaguar doesn’t offer the convenience and security of a built-in child booster seat in the I-Pace. Their owners must carry a heavy booster seat in and out of the vehicle; XC60 owners can just fold their built-in child seat up or down.

The Volvo XC60 has a standard driver’s side knee airbag mounted low on the dashboard. The knee airbag helps prevent the driver from sliding under the seatbelts or the main frontal airbag; this keeps the driver better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. A knee airbag also helps keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The I-Pace doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The XC60 has a standard Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS), which use a specially designed seat to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the WHIPS allows the backrest to travel backwards to cushion the occupants and the headrests move forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. At the same time the pretensioning seatbelts fire, removing slack from the belts. The I-Pace doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

The XC60 has standard Automatic Braking After Collision, which automatically apply the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The I-Pace doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

When descending a steep, off-road slope, the XC60’s standard Hill Descent Control allows you to creep down safely. The I-Pace doesn’t offer Hill Descent Control.

The XC60 has a standard blind spot warning system which uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them and moves the vehicle back into its lane. A system to reveal vehicles in the I-Pace’s blind spot costs extra.

Both the XC60 and the I-Pace have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors, available all wheel drive and around view monitors.

For its top level performance in IIHS driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests, its standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system, its standard vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention system, and its standard headlight’s “Acceptable” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the XC60 its highest rating: “Top Pick Plus” for 2021, a rating granted to only 63 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The I-Pace has not been tested, yet.

The XC60’s corrosion warranty is 6 years longer than the I-Pace’s (12 vs. 6 years).

There are over 55 percent more Volvo dealers than there are Jaguar dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the XC60’s warranty.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Volvo vehicles are more reliable than Jaguar vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Volvo 25th in reliability. With 43 more problems per 100 vehicles, Jaguar is ranked 31st.

The XC60 T8’s standard 2.0 turbo/supercharged 4-cylinder hybrid produces 6 more horsepower (400 vs. 394) than the I-Pace’s electric motors. The XC60 T8 Polestar Engineered’s standard 2.0 turbo/supercharged 4-cylinder hybrid produces 21 more horsepower (415 vs. 394) than the I-Pace’s electric motors.

The XC60 B5’s maximum EPA estimated driving range on a full tank of fuel and a full charge is 545.2 miles, after which it can be refueled at any gas station in minutes. The I-Pace’s range is only 234 miles, after which the minimum recharge time is 1 hour and 25 minutes for only a 80% charge at a specially configured quick charge station not available in most areas. A full recharge at a conventional charging station can take up to 12 hours and 54 minutes.

In heavy traffic or at stop lights the XC60’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. If the conditions warrant or the driver wishes, the system can be manually disabled at any time for the duration of a trip with its optional disable switch. The I-Pace doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

For better traction, the XC60 T8 Polestar Engineered’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the I-Pace (265/35R22 vs. 255/40R22).

The XC60’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 60 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the I-Pace’s standard 65 series tires. The XC60 T8 Polestar Engineered’s optional tires have a lower 35 series profile than the I-Pace’s optional 40 series tires.

For better maneuverability, the XC60’s turning circle is 1.9 feet tighter than the I-Pace’s (37.4 feet vs. 39.3 feet).

For greater off-road capability the XC60 w/Air Suspension has a greater minimum ground clearance than the I-Pace (8.3 vs. 7.8 inches), allowing the XC60 to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The XC60’s minimum ground clearance is .7 inch higher than on the I-Pace (8.5 vs. 7.8 inches).

The Volvo XC60 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 850 to 900 pounds less than the Jaguar I-Pace.

The XC60 has .6 inches more front legroom, .6 inches more front shoulder room, .8 inches more rear headroom, 3 inches more rear legroom and 1.7 inches more rear shoulder room than the I-Pace.

The XC60’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the I-Pace’s (3500 vs. 1653 pounds).

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the XC60 has a standard rear wiper. The I-Pace doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

Consumer Reports rated the XC60’s headlight performance “Very Good,” a higher rating than the I-Pace’s headlights, which were rated “Good.”

To help drivers avoid possible obstacles, the XC60 has standard cornering lights to illuminate around corners when the turn signals are activated. The I-Pace doesn’t offer cornering lights. The XC60 also has standard adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle.

The XC60 Inscription offers optional massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the I-Pace.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Volvo XC60 offers an optional wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. The I-Pace doesn’t offer wireless personal charging.

The XC60 is available in both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The I-Pace doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.
