The Veloster has a standard Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, which uses forward mounted sensors to warn the driver of a possible collision ahead. If the driver doesn’t react and the system determines a collision is imminent, it automatically applies the brakes at full-force in order to reduce the force of the crash or avoid it altogether. The Camaro offers an available collision warning system without the automated brake feature that would prevent or reduce the collision if the driver fails to react.

The Veloster’s lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane and gently nudges the vehicle back towards its lane. The Camaro doesn’t offer a lane departure warning system.

The Veloster has a standard blind spot warning system which uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them. A system to reveal vehicles in the Camaro’s blind spot costs extra.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the Veloster has a standard cross-path warning system, which uses sensors in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. Cross-path warning costs extra on the Camaro and isn't available on the not available.

The Veloster’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Camaro doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the Veloster and the Camaro have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights and rearview cameras.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) performs roof strength tests. In that test the Veloster earned the top rating of “Good” because its roof supported over four times the Veloster’s weight before being crushed five inches. The Camaro was rated lower at “Acceptable.”

For its top level performance in IIHS driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests, with its optional vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system, with its optional vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention system, and its available headlight’s “Acceptable” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Veloster the rating of “Top Pick” for 2021, a rating granted to only 121 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Camaro is not a “Top Pick.”

The Veloster comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Camaro’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 2 years or 24,000 miles sooner.

Hyundai’s powertrain warranty covers the Veloster 5 years and 40,000 miles longer than Chevrolet covers the Camaro. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the Camaro ends after only 5 years or 60,000 miles.

The Veloster’s corrosion warranty is 1 year and unlimited miles longer than the Camaro’s (7/unlimited vs. 6/100,000).

Hyundai pays for scheduled maintenance on the Veloster for 3 years and 36,000 miles. Hyundai will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Chevrolet only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the Camaro.

For smoother operation, better efficiency and fewer moving parts, the Veloster has an overhead cam design, rather than the old pushrod design of some of the engines in the Camaro.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Veloster’s reliability 38 points higher than the Camaro.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Veloster first among compact sporty cars in their 2020 Initial Quality Study. The Camaro isn’t in the top three in its category.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Hyundai vehicles are more reliable than Chevrolet vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Hyundai 7th in reliability, above the industry average. With 14 more problems per 100 vehicles, Chevrolet is ranked 12th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Hyundai vehicles are more reliable than Chevrolet vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Hyundai 11 places higher in reliability than Chevrolet.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Hyundai Veloster uses regular unleaded gasoline. The Camaro with the 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder engine requires premium for maximum efficiency, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

The Veloster offers an optional sequential manual gearbox (SMG). With no clutch pedal to worry about and a fully automatic mode, an SMG is much more efficient than a conventional automatic but just as easy to drive. The Camaro doesn’t offer an SMG.

For better stopping power the Veloster’s standard brake rotors are larger than those on the Camaro:

The Veloster’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs standard on the Camaro LS/LT are solid, not vented.

The Veloster stops much shorter than the Camaro:

The Veloster’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Camaro’s standard 50 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Veloster has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the Camaro.

The Hyundai Veloster may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 250 to 900 pounds less than the Chevrolet Camaro.

The Veloster is 1 foot, 8.4 inches shorter than the Camaro, making the Veloster easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

For excellent aerodynamics, the Veloster has standard flush composite headlights. The Camaro has recessed headlights that spoil its aerodynamic shape and create extra drag.

As tested by Car and Driver, the interior of the Veloster N is quieter than the Camaro SS Coupe:

The Veloster has 1 inch more front shoulder room, .9 inches more rear headroom, 4.2 inches more rear legroom and 3.9 inches more rear shoulder room than the Camaro Coupe.

The Veloster has a much larger trunk with its rear seat up than the Camaro Coupe (19.9 vs. 9.1 cubic feet).

The Veloster’s standard rear seats fold to accommodate long and bulky cargo. The Camaro Convertible/ZL1 1LE doesn’t offer folding rear seats.

The Veloster’s standard folding rear seats are split to accommodate bulky cargo. The Camaro Coupe’s standard single piece folding rear seat is not as flexible; long cargo and a passenger can’t share the rear seat.

The Veloster’s standard power windows have a locking feature to keep children in the rear seat from operating them, but the driver can still raise and lower all of them with the lock engaged. Chevrolet does not offer a locking feature on the Camaro’s standard power windows.

The Veloster has a standard locking fuel door with a remote release located convenient to the driver. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank. The Camaro doesn’t offer a locking fuel door.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Veloster has a standard rear wiper. The Camaro doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

While driving with high beams on, sensitive light sensors standard on the Veloster detect other vehicles which could be blinded and automatically switch to low beams. The Camaro doesn’t offer automatic dimming high beams.

The Veloster’s standard outside mirrors include heating elements to clear off the mirrors for better visibility. Heated mirrors cost extra on the Camaro and aren’t offered on the Camaro LS/LT1.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Veloster is less expensive to operate than the Camaro because it costs $373 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost much less on the Veloster than the Camaro, including $146 less for a water pump, $488 less for a muffler, $165 less for front brake pads, $221 less for fuel injection, $198 less for a fuel pump and $344 less for a timing belt/chain.

The Veloster N was chosen as one of Automobile Magazine’s “All Stars” in 2019. The Camaro hasn’t been picked since 2013.
