Compare the2022 Nissan ArmadaVS 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

Both the Armada and the Grand Cherokee L have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, available all wheel drive and around view monitors.

For smoother operation, better efficiency and fewer moving parts, the Armada has an overhead cam design, rather than the old pushrod design of the 5.7 V8 in the Grand Cherokee L.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Armada first among large suvs in their 2020 Initial Quality Study. The Grand Cherokee L isn’t in the top three in its category.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Nissan vehicles are more reliable than Jeep vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Nissan 21st in reliability. With 13 more problems per 100 vehicles, Jeep is ranked 24th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Nissan vehicles are more reliable than Jeep vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Nissan 6 places higher in reliability than Jeep.

The Armada’s 5.6 DOHC V8 produces 110 more horsepower (400 vs. 290) and 156 lbs.-ft. more torque (413 vs. 257) than the Grand Cherokee L’s standard 3.6 DOHC V6. The Armada’s 5.6 DOHC V8 produces 43 more horsepower (400 vs. 357) and 23 lbs.-ft. more torque (413 vs. 390) than the Grand Cherokee L’s optional 5.7 V8.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Nissan Armada uses regular unleaded gasoline. The Grand Cherokee L with the 5.7 V8 engine requires mid-grade for maximum efficiency, which can cost 5 to 40 cents more per gallon.

The Armada has 3 gallons more fuel capacity than the Grand Cherokee L (26 vs. 23 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

For better traction, the Armada’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Grand Cherokee L (275/60R20 vs. 265/60R18).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Armada Platinum has standard 22-inch wheels. The Grand Cherokee L’s largest wheels are only 21-inches.

The Nissan Armada’s wheels have 6 lugs for longer wheel bearing life, less chance of rotor warping and greater strength. The Jeep Grand Cherokee L only has 5 wheel lugs per wheel.

The Armada has a standard full size spare so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare costs extra on the Grand Cherokee L. Without the option you must depend on a temporary spare, which limits mileage and speed before replacement.

The rear suspension of the Armada uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the Grand Cherokee L, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Armada is 2.1 inches wider in the front and 2.5 inches wider in the rear than on the Grand Cherokee L.

For greater off-road capability the Armada S/SV has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Grand Cherokee L Laredo/Limited (9.1 vs. 8.5 inches), allowing the Armada to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The Armada has standard seating for 8 passengers; the Grand Cherokee L can only carry up to 7.

The Armada has 1.1 inches more front headroom, .6 inches more front legroom, 1.8 inches more front hip room, 4.6 inches more front shoulder room, .1 inches more rear headroom, 1.6 inches more rear legroom, 2.1 inches more rear hip room, 5.4 inches more rear shoulder room, 5.9 inches more third row hip room and 8.6 inches more third row shoulder room than the Grand Cherokee L.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Armada’s middle row seats recline, and the Armada Platinum’s third row seats also recline. The Grand Cherokee L’s third row seats don’t recline.

The Armada’s cargo area provides more volume than the Grand Cherokee L.

The Armada’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Grand Cherokee L’s (8500 vs. 3500 pounds).

The Armada’s front and rear power windows all open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The Grand Cherokee L’s standard rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to open them fully. Only its driver’s window closes automatically.

If the windows are left open on the Armada the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Grand Cherokee L can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.
