For enhanced safety, the front and rear seat shoulder belts of the Toyota Camry Hybrid have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid doesn’t offer pretensioners for the rear seat belts.

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the Camry Hybrid are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The Ioniq Hybrid doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The Toyota Camry Hybrid has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Ioniq Hybrid doesn’t offer a front passenger side knee airbag.

The Camry Hybrid has standard Whiplash Injury Lessening Seats (WIL), which use a specially designed seat to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the WIL system allows the backrest to travel backwards to cushion the occupants and the headrests move forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The Ioniq Hybrid doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

The Camry Hybrid has a standard Secondary Collision Brake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Ioniq Hybrid doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The Camry Hybrid XLE offers an optional Rear Cross Traffic Braking that use rear sensors to monitor and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a rear collision. The Ioniq Hybrid doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

The Camry Hybrid XLE/XSE offers an optional Bird’s Eye View Camera to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The Ioniq Hybrid only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

Both the Camry Hybrid and the Ioniq Hybrid have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, available blind spot warning systems and rear cross-path warning.

For its top level performance in IIHS driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests, its standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system, its standard vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention system, and its standard headlight’s “Good” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Camry Hybrid its highest rating: “Top Pick Plus” for 2021, a rating granted to only 63 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Ioniq Hybrid has not been fully tested, yet.

Warranty

There are over 50 percent more Toyota dealers than there are Hyundai dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Camry Hybrid’s warranty.

Reliability

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Camry Hybrid’s reliability 36 points higher than the Ioniq Hybrid.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Hyundai vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Toyota fourth in reliability, above the industry average. With 3 more problems per 100 vehicles, Hyundai is ranked 7th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Hyundai vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Toyota second in reliability. Hyundai is ranked 6th.

Engine

The Camry Hybrid’s 2.5 DOHC 4-cylinder hybrid produces 69 more horsepower (208 vs. 139) than the Ioniq Hybrid’s 1.6 DOHC 4-cylinder hybrid.

As tested in Consumer Reports the Toyota Camry Hybrid is faster than the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid:

Fuel Economy and Range

The Camry Hybrid has 1.3 gallons more fuel capacity than the Ioniq Hybrid (13.2 vs. 11.9 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Transmission

The Camry Hybrid has a standard continuously variable transmission (CVT). With no “steps” between gears, it can keep the engine at the most efficient speed for fuel economy, or keep it at its peak horsepower indefinitely for maximum acceleration. The Ioniq Hybrid doesn’t offer a CVT.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Camry Hybrid’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Ioniq Hybrid:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Camry Hybrid has larger standard tires than the Ioniq Hybrid (205/65R16 vs. 195/65R15). The Camry Hybrid SE/XLE’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Ioniq Hybrid (235/45R18 vs. 225/45R17).

The Camry Hybrid XSE’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Ioniq Hybrid Limited’s optional 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Camry Hybrid has standard 16-inch wheels. Smaller 15-inch wheels are standard on the Ioniq Hybrid. The Camry Hybrid XSE’s 19-inch wheels are larger than the 17-inch wheels optional on the Ioniq Hybrid Limited.

The Camry Hybrid has a standard space-saver spare tire so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the Ioniq Hybrid; it requires you to depend on roadside assistance and your vehicle will have to be towed.

Suspension and Handling

The Camry Hybrid has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The Ioniq Hybrid’s suspension doesn’t offer rear gas-charged shocks.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Camry Hybrid’s wheelbase is 4.9 inches longer than on the Ioniq Hybrid (111.2 inches vs. 106.3 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Camry Hybrid is 1.4 inches wider in the front and 1.1 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the Ioniq Hybrid.

The Camry Hybrid’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (57.3% to 42.7%) than the Ioniq Hybrid’s (59.9% to 40.1%). This gives the Camry Hybrid more stable handling and braking.

The Camry Hybrid LE executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the Ioniq Hybrid SEL (27.8 seconds @ .62 average G’s vs. 28.4 seconds @ .58 average G’s).

Chassis

As tested by Car and Driver while under full throttle, the interior of the Camry Hybrid XLE is quieter than the Ioniq Hybrid Limited (72 vs. 73 dB).

Passenger Space

The Camry Hybrid has 3.7 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Ioniq Hybrid (99.9 vs. 96.2).

The Camry Hybrid has 1.6 inches more front hip room, 1.6 inches more front shoulder room, .2 inches more rear headroom, 2.3 inches more rear legroom, 1.7 inches more rear hip room and .7 inches more rear shoulder room than the Ioniq Hybrid.

Cargo Capacity

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the Camry Hybrid. The Ioniq Hybrid doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

Servicing Ease

The Camry Hybrid uses gas struts to support the hood for easier service access. The Ioniq Hybrid uses a prop rod to support its heavy hood. It takes two hands to open the hood and set the prop rod, the prop rod gets in the way during maintenance and service, and the prop rod could be knocked out, causing the heavy hood to fall on the person maintaining or servicing the car.

Ergonomics

The Camry Hybrid offers a remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The Ioniq Hybrid doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The Camry Hybrid XLE/XSE offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed, tachometer and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Ioniq Hybrid doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The Camry Hybrid’s power parking brake sets with one touch and releases with one touch or automatically. The Ioniq Hybrid’s parking brake has to released manually.

The Camry Hybrid’s front and rear power windows all open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The Ioniq Hybrid’s standard passenger windows don’t open or close automatically. With the Ioniq Hybrid Limited’s power windows, only the front windows open or close automatically.

If the windows are left open on the Camry Hybrid the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. (This window function must be activated by your Toyota service department.) The driver of the Ioniq Hybrid can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Camry Hybrid’s power window, power lock, power mirror and cruise control switches are lit from behind, making them plainly visible and easier to operate at night. The Ioniq Hybrid’s power mirror switches are unlit, making them difficult to find at night and operate safely.

The Camry Hybrid’s speed-sensitive wipers speed up when the vehicle does, so that the driver doesn’t have to continually adjust the speed of the wipers. The Ioniq Hybrid’s manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

Optional air-conditioned seats in the Camry Hybrid XLE/XSE keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The Ioniq Hybrid doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

On extremely cold winter days, the Camry Hybrid’s optional (except Nightshade) heated steering wheel provides comfort, allowing the driver to steer safely and comfortably before the car heater warms up. The Ioniq Hybrid doesn’t offer a heated steering wheel.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Toyota Camry Hybrid (except Nightshade) offers an optional wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. The Ioniq Hybrid doesn’t offer wireless personal charging.

Economic Advantages

The Camry Hybrid will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the Camry Hybrid will retain 47.34% to 49.12% of its original price after five years, while the Ioniq Hybrid only retains 43.64% to 44.15%.

Recommendations

Consumer Reports® chose the Toyota Camry Hybrid as its “Top Pick,” the highest scoring vehicle in its category, based on reliability, safety and performance. The Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid isn't recommended.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Camry Hybrid first among midsize cars in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The Ioniq Hybrid isn’t in the top three.
