Both the Sequoia and the Wagoneer have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available four-wheel drive.

For smoother operation, better efficiency and fewer moving parts, the Sequoia has an overhead cam design, rather than the old pushrod design of the engines in the Wagoneer.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Sequoia third among large suvs in their 2020 Initial Quality Study. The Wagoneer isn’t in the top three in its category.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Jeep vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Toyota fourth in reliability, above the industry average. With 43 more problems per 100 vehicles, Jeep is ranked 24th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Jeep vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Toyota second in reliability. Jeep is ranked 19th.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Toyota Sequoia uses regular unleaded gasoline. The Wagoneer requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

The Sequoia’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the Wagoneer are solid, not vented.

The Sequoia has a standard full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the Wagoneer; it requires you to depend on a temporary spare, which limits mileage and speed before replacement.

For greater off-road capability the Sequoia has a 1.7 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Wagoneer (10 vs. 8.3 inches), allowing the Sequoia to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The Toyota Sequoia may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 250 to 450 pounds less than the Jeep Wagoneer.

The Sequoia is 9.6 inches shorter than the Wagoneer, making the Sequoia easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The Sequoia has 1.6 inches more front legroom, .3 inches more front shoulder room, .4 inches more rear shoulder room and 1.3 inches more third row shoulder room than the Wagoneer.

The front step up height for the Sequoia is 1.8 inches lower than the Wagoneer (21” vs. 22.8”).

The Sequoia’s cargo area provides more volume than the Wagoneer.

The Sequoia’s front and rear power windows all open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The Wagoneer’s standard rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to open or close them fully.

If the front windows are left open on the Sequoia the driver can close them at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can also lower the windows the same way. The driver of the Wagoneer can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The Sequoia has standard headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The Wagoneer doesn’t offer headlight washers.
