Compare the2022 Toyota SequoiaVS 2021 Lexus LX 570

The Sequoia’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The LX 570 doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the Sequoia and the LX 570 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available four-wheel drive.

Toyota pays for scheduled maintenance on the Sequoia for 1 year and 15000 miles longer than Lexus pays for maintenance for the LX 570 (2/25000 vs. 1/10,000).

There are over 5 times as many Toyota dealers as there are Lexus dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Sequoia’s warranty.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Sequoia third among large suvs in their 2020 Initial Quality Study. The LX 570 isn’t in the top three in its category.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Lexus vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Toyota second in reliability. Lexus is ranked third.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Toyota Sequoia uses regular unleaded gasoline. The LX 570 requires premium for maximum efficiency, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

The Sequoia has 1.8 gallons more fuel capacity than the LX 570 (26.4 vs. 24.6 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

For superior ride and handling, the Toyota Sequoia has fully independent front and rear suspensions. An independent suspension allows the wheels to follow the road at the best angle for gripping the pavement, without compromising ride comfort. The Lexus LX 570 has a solid rear axle, with a non-independent rear suspension.

The Sequoia has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The LX 570’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Sequoia’s wheelbase is 9.8 inches longer than on the LX 570 (122 inches vs. 112.2 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Sequoia is 3 inches wider in the front and 4.3 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the LX 570.

The Sequoia TRD Sport 4x4 handles at .78 G’s, while the LX 570 pulls only .73 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The Sequoia TRD Sport 4x4 executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1 seconds quicker than the LX 570 (27.3 seconds @ .65 average G’s vs. 28.3 seconds @ .59 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the Sequoia’s turning circle is .6 feet tighter than the LX 570’s (38.1 feet vs. 38.7 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Sequoia has a 1.1 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the LX 570 (10 vs. 8.9 inches), allowing the Sequoia to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The rear step up height for the Sequoia is 1.8 inches lower than the LX 570 (22.2” vs. 24”).

The Sequoia’s liftgate lifts up in one piece, completely out of the way of loading and unloading, while sheltering the cargo loading area. The LX 570’s tailgate’s top part raises up, but the bottom part lowers, getting in the way of loading and making an uneven surface for sliding cargo.

The Sequoia’s minimum standard towing capacity is much higher than the LX 570’s (7100 vs. 7000 pounds).

The Sequoia has a higher maximum payload capacity than the LX 570 (1350 vs. 1280 lbs.).

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Sequoia to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The LX 570 doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.
