Both the Sequoia and the GX460 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available four-wheel drive.

The Toyota Sequoia weighs 532 to 859 pounds more than the Lexus GX460. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

Toyota pays for scheduled maintenance on the Sequoia for 1 year and 15000 miles longer than Lexus pays for maintenance for the GX460 (2/25000 vs. 1/10,000).

There are over 5 times as many Toyota dealers as there are Lexus dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Sequoia’s warranty.

To reliably power the ignition and other systems and to recharge the battery, the Sequoia has a standard 180-amp alternator. The GX460’s 130-amp alternator isn’t as powerful.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Lexus vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Toyota second in reliability. Lexus is ranked third.

The Sequoia’s 5.7 DOHC V8 produces 80 more horsepower (381 vs. 301) and 72 lbs.-ft. more torque (401 vs. 329) than the GX460’s 4.6 DOHC V8.

As tested in Car and Driver the Toyota Sequoia is faster than the Lexus GX460:

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Toyota Sequoia uses regular unleaded gasoline. The GX460 requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

The Sequoia has 3.4 gallons more fuel capacity than the GX460 (26.4 vs. 23 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

For better stopping power the Sequoia’s brake rotors are larger than those on the GX460:

For better traction, the Sequoia has larger tires than the GX460 (275/65R18 vs. 265/60R18).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Sequoia TRD Sport/Limited/Nightshade has standard 20-inch wheels. The GX460’s largest wheels are only 19-inches.

For superior ride and handling, the Toyota Sequoia has fully independent front and rear suspensions. An independent suspension allows the wheels to follow the road at the best angle for gripping the pavement, without compromising ride comfort. The Lexus GX460 has a solid rear axle, with a non-independent rear suspension.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Sequoia’s wheelbase is 12.2 inches longer than on the GX460 (122 inches vs. 109.8 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Sequoia is 5.5 inches wider in the front and 6.7 inches wider in the rear than on the GX460.

The Sequoia TRD Sport 4x4 handles at .78 G’s, while the GX460 pulls only .73 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The Sequoia TRD Sport 4x4 executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1 seconds quicker than the GX460 (27.3 seconds @ .65 average G’s vs. 28.3 seconds @ .58 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the Sequoia’s turning circle is 3 feet tighter than the GX460’s (38.1 feet vs. 41.1 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Sequoia has a 1.9 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the GX460 (10 vs. 8.1 inches), allowing the Sequoia to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

As tested by Car and Driver while under full throttle, the interior of the Sequoia 4x4 is quieter than the GX460 (71 vs. 73 dB).

The Sequoia has standard seating for 8 passengers; the GX460 can only carry 7.

The Sequoia has .8 inches more front legroom, 6 inches more front hip room, 11 inches more front shoulder room, 6.8 inches more rear legroom, 4.7 inches more rear hip room, 8.3 inches more rear shoulder room, 6 inches more third row legroom, 7.3 inches more third row hip room and 11.2 inches more third row shoulder room than the GX460.

The Sequoia’s cargo area provides more volume than the GX460.

The Sequoia’s liftgate lifts up in one piece, completely out of the way of loading and unloading, while sheltering the cargo loading area. The GX460’s swing out door blocks loading from the passenger’s side.

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier, especially for short adults, the Sequoia Limited/Nightshade has a standard power liftgate, which opens and closes automatically by pressing a button. The GX460 doesn’t offer a power cargo door.

The Sequoia’s minimum standard towing capacity is much higher than the GX460’s (7100 vs. 6500 pounds).

The Sequoia has a higher maximum payload capacity than the GX460 (1350 vs. 1295 lbs.).

The Sequoia’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The GX460 does not have an oil pressure gauge.

The Sequoia is available in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The GX460 doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

Insurance will cost less for the Sequoia owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Sequoia will cost $115 to $745 less than the GX460 over a five-year period.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Sequoia is less expensive to operate than the GX460 because typical repairs cost much less on the Sequoia than the GX460, including $17 less for a water pump, $423 less for a muffler, $123 less for fuel injection and $975 less for a power steering pump.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Toyota Sequoia will be $536 to $1083 less than for the Lexus GX460.
