Compare the2022 Toyota SequoiaVS 2021 Ford Expedition Max

The Toyota Sequoia has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Expedition Max doesn’t offer knee airbags.

Both the Sequoia and the Expedition Max have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available four-wheel drive.

Toyota pays for scheduled maintenance on the Sequoia for 2 years and 25000 miles. Toyota will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Ford doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the Expedition Max.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Sequoia’s reliability 28 points higher than the Expedition Max.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Sequoia third among large suvs in their 2020 Initial Quality Study. The Expedition Max isn’t in the top three.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Ford vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Toyota fourth in reliability, above the industry average. With 32 more problems per 100 vehicles, Ford is ranked 22nd.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Ford vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Toyota second in reliability. Ford is ranked 22nd.

The Sequoia’s 5.7 DOHC V8 produces 6 more horsepower (381 vs. 375) than the Expedition Max’s standard 3.5 turbo V6.

As tested in Consumer Reports the Toyota Sequoia is faster than the Ford Expedition Max (base engine):

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Toyota Sequoia uses regular unleaded gasoline. The Expedition Max requires premium for maximum efficiency, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

The Sequoia has Active-TRAC, a true four-wheel-drive system, which uses a four wheel traction control system to redirect engine power to the axle and wheel that still has traction to keep the Sequoia moving if even only one wheel still has traction. The Expedition Max doesn’t offer a true four-wheel drive system; it could get stuck while one or more wheels still have traction.

The Sequoia stops shorter than the Expedition Max:

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Sequoia is .3 inches wider in the front and 1.9 inches wider in the rear than on the Expedition Max.

The Sequoia TRD Sport 4x4 handles at .78 G’s, while the Expedition Max Platinum 4x4 pulls only .77 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The Sequoia TRD Sport 4x4 executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the Expedition Max Platinum 4x4 (27.3 seconds @ .65 average G’s vs. 28 seconds @ .61 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the Sequoia’s turning circle is 5.2 feet tighter than the Expedition Max’s (38.1 feet vs. 43.3 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Sequoia has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Expedition Max (10 vs. 9.7 inches), allowing the Sequoia to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The Sequoia is 1 foot, 4.8 inches shorter than the Expedition Max, making the Sequoia easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The Sequoia has .3 inches more front hip room, 1.5 inches more front shoulder room, .8 inches more rear shoulder room and 1.4 inches more third row shoulder room than the Expedition Max.

The Sequoia’s minimum standard towing capacity is much higher than the Expedition Max’s (7100 vs. 6000 pounds).

The Sequoia’s front and rear power windows all open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The Expedition Max’s standard rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to open or close them fully.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The Sequoia has standard headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The Expedition Max doesn’t offer headlight washers.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Sequoia to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Expedition Max doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

The Sequoia has a standard dual zone air conditioning allows the driver and front passenger to choose two completely different temperatures so people with different temperature preferences won’t have to compromise. This makes both the driver and front passenger as comfortable as possible. Dual zone air conditioning costs extra on the Expedition Max.

Insurance will cost less for the Sequoia owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Sequoia will cost $385 less than the Expedition Max over a five-year period.

The Sequoia will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the Sequoia will retain 46.51% to 54.58% of its original price after five years, while the Expedition Max only retains 43.8% to 46.38%.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Toyota Sequoia will be $3249 to $11221 less than for the Ford Expedition Max.
