The AMG S-Class Coupe doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

The 8 Series’ corrosion warranty is 7 years longer than the AMG S-Class Coupe’s (12 vs. 5 years).

BMW pays for scheduled maintenance on the 8 Series for 3 years and 36,000 miles. BMW will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Mercedes doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the AMG S-Class Coupe.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the 8 Series’ reliability 26 points higher than the AMG S-Class Coupe.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the 8 Series first among large premium cars in their 2020 Initial Quality Study. The AMG S-Class Coupe isn’t in the top three in its category.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2020 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that BMW vehicles are better in initial quality than Mercedes vehicles. J.D. Power ranks BMW 18th in initial quality. With 26 more problems per 100 vehicles, Mercedes is ranked 30th.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that BMW vehicles are more reliable than Mercedes vehicles. J.D. Power ranks BMW 10th in reliability, above the industry average. With 14 more problems per 100 vehicles, Mercedes is ranked 15th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that BMW vehicles are more reliable than Mercedes vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks BMW 8 places higher in reliability than Mercedes.

Regenerative brakes improve the 8 Series’ fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The AMG S-Class Coupe doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

Both the 8 Series and the AMG S-Class Coupe have a standard automatic start/stop engine feature to stop unnecessary fuel waste and pollution at stop lights and heavy traffic. All 8 Series have a standard disable switch for the system, so a driver can keep the engine from shutting off when the vehicle stops temporarily.

The 8 Series’ optional 245/35R20 front and 275/30R20 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series front and 30 series rear profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the AMG S-Class Coupe’s 40 series front and 35 series rear tires.

Changing a flat tire near traffic can be dangerous and inconvenient. The run-flat tires available on the 8 Series can be driven up to 50 miles without any air pressure, allowing you to drive to a service station for a repair. The AMG S-Class Coupe doesn’t offer run-flat tires.

The M850i offers an available active suspension system, which counteracts cornering forces actively, limiting body roll and improving handling and stability. Mercedes doesn’t offer an active suspension on the AMG S-Class Coupe.

The M850i xDrive Coupe handles at .99 G’s, while the AMG S-Class Coupe pulls only .92 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

Insurance will cost less for the 8 Series owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the 8 Series will cost $2630 to $6945 less than the AMG S-Class Coupe over a five-year period.

The 8 Series will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the 8 Series will retain 44.6% to 45.19% of its original price after five years, while the AMG S-Class Coupe only retains 38.51% to 39.74%.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the BMW 8 Series will be $48326 to $64525 less than for the Mercedes AMG S-Class Coupe.
