The F-Super Duty’s optional driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Ram HD doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the F-Super Duty and the Ram HD have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available four-wheel drive, crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

There are over 25 percent more Ford dealers than there are Ram dealers, which makes it easier should you ever need service under the F-Super Duty’s warranty.

The F-Super Duty has a standard “limp home system” to keep drivers from being stranded if most or all of the engine’s coolant is lost. The engine will run on only half of its cylinders at a time, reduce its power and light a warning lamp on the dashboard so the driver can get to a service station for repairs. The Ram HD doesn’t offer a lost coolant limp home mode, so a coolant leak could strand you or seriously damage the truck’s engine.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the F-Super Duty first among large heavy duty pickups in their 2020 Initial Quality Study. The Ram HD isn’t in the top three.

The F-Super Duty’s optional 7.3 V8 produces 20 more horsepower (430 vs. 410) and 46 lbs.-ft. more torque (475 vs. 429) than the Ram HD’s 6.4 V8.

The F-Super Duty’s 6.7 turbo V8 diesel produces 105 more horsepower (475 vs. 370) and 200 lbs.-ft. more torque (1050 vs. 850) than the Ram HD’s optional 6.7 turbo diesel. The F-Super Duty’s 6.7 turbo V8 diesel produces 75 more horsepower (475 vs. 400) than the Ram HD 3500’s optional 6.7 turbo diesel.

As tested in Car and Driver the F-Super Duty with 6.7 turbo V8 diesel is faster than the Ram HD with 6.7 turbo diesel (automatic transmissions tested):

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Ford F-Super Duty uses regular unleaded gasoline. The Ram HD requires mid-grade for maximum efficiency, which can cost 5 to 40 cents more per gallon.

The F-Super Duty has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Ram HD doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

A 10-speed automatic is available on the Ford F-Super Duty, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the Ram HD.

For better stopping power the F-450 Crew Cab’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Ram HD:

For better traction, the F-Super Duty has larger standard tires than the Ram HD (245/75R17 vs. 235/80R17).

The F-Super Duty’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 75 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Ram HD DRW’s standard 80 series tires.

The F-450’s wheels have 10 lugs for longer wheel bearing life, less chance of rotor warping and greater strength. The Ram HD only has 8 wheel lugs per wheel.

The F-Super Duty 4x2’s independent front suspension is much lighter than the Ram HD’s solid front axle, which allows the F-Super Duty’s wheels to react more quickly and accurately to the road’s surface, improving both ride and handling.

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the F-Super Duty is 1.5 inches wider in the front and .2 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the Ram HD.

The F-250 Standard Bed Crew Cab 4x4 handles at .75 G’s, while the Ram HD 3500 Long Box Limited Crew Cab 4x4 pulls only .61 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The F-250 Standard Bed Crew Cab 4x4 executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.4 seconds quicker than the Ram HD 3500 Long Box Limited Crew Cab 4x4 (28.8 seconds @ .57 average G’s vs. 30.2 seconds @ .53 average G’s).

The F-Super Duty Regular Cab has 2.1 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Ram HD Regular Cab (64.6 vs. 62.5). The F-Super Duty Crew Cab has 7.2 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Ram HD Crew Cab (131.8 vs. 124.6).

The F-Super Duty Regular Cab has 1 inch more front headroom, 3 inches more front legroom and .8 inches more front shoulder room than the Ram HD Regular Cab.

The F-Super Duty Crew Cab has 3 inches more front legroom, .8 inches more front shoulder room, .6 inches more rear headroom, 3.4 inches more rear legroom, 2 inches more rear hip room and .3 inches more rear shoulder room than the Ram HD Crew Cab.

The F-Super Duty Regular Cab has a much larger cargo box than the Ram HD Regular Cab shortbed (78.5 vs. 74.7 cubic feet).

The F-Super Duty Crew Cab shortbed has a much larger cargo box than the Ram HD Crew Cab shortbed (65.4 vs. 57.5 cubic feet). The F-Super Duty Crew Cab longbed has a much larger cargo box than the Ram HD Crew Cab longbed (78.5 vs. 74.7 cubic feet).

A low lift-over bed design makes loading and unloading the F-Super Duty Regular Cab easier. The F-Super Duty Regular Cab’s bed lift-over height is 36.5 inches, while the Ram HD’s liftover is 38.5 inches. The F-Super Duty Crew Cab’s liftover is only 35.3 inches.

The F-Super Duty’s cargo box is larger than the Ram HD’s in almost every dimension:

The Ford F-Super Duty has a standard tailgate assist feature, which prevents the heavy tailgate from falling with a crash and causing injury. It allows adults and children to easily open and close the tailgate with one hand to better facilitate loading and unloading. Tailgate assist costs extra on the Ram HD, and isn’t available on the Ram HD Tradesman.

The F-Super Duty’s minimum standard towing capacity is much higher than the Ram HD’s (12300 vs. 1408 pounds).

The F-Super Duty’s available front power windows open or close with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The Ram HD’s basic optional power window switches have to be held the entire time to close them fully.

If the windows are left open on the F-Super Duty the driver can close them all from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can also lower the windows the same way. The driver of the Ram HD can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

In case you lock your keys in your vehicle, or don’t have them with you, you can let yourself in using the F-Super Duty’s available exterior PIN entry system (not available on F-Super Duty XL). The Ram HD doesn’t offer an exterior PIN entry system, and its extra cost SiriusXM Guardian can’t unlock the doors if the vehicle doesn’t have cell phone reception or the driver can’t contact the service.

The F-Super Duty (except XL/XLT/Lariat) offers optional massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the Ram HD.

Car and Driver performed a comparison test in its February 2021 issue and they ranked the Ford F-250 Long Bed Crew Cab 4x4 higher than the Ram HD 2500 Long Box Crew Cab 4x4.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the F-Super Duty first among large heavy duty pickups in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The Ram HD isn’t in the top three.
