Both the Canyon and Maverick have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The Canyon has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The Maverick’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the Canyon are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The Maverick doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

Both the Canyon and the Maverick have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, rearview cameras, available all wheel drive, collision warning systems, lane departure warning systems and rear parking sensors.

For its top level performance in all IIHS frontal, side, rear impact and roof-crush tests, and with its optional front crash prevention system, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Canyon the rating of “Top Pick” for 2016, a rating granted to only 221 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Maverick has not been tested, yet.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2020 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that GMC vehicles are better in initial quality than Ford vehicles. J.D. Power ranks GMC 8th in initial quality, above the industry average. With 23 more problems per 100 vehicles, Ford is ranked 16th, below the industry average.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that GMC vehicles are more reliable than Ford vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks GMC 6 places higher in reliability than Ford.

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the Canyon V6’s fuel efficiency. The Maverick doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the GMC Canyon uses regular unleaded gasoline. The Maverick requires premium for maximum efficiency, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

The Canyon has 7.2 gallons more fuel capacity than the Maverick Hybrid’s standard fuel tank (21 vs. 13.8 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The Canyon has 4.5 gallons more fuel capacity than the Maverick 2.0 EcoBoost’s standard fuel tank (21 vs. 16.5 gallons).

The Canyon has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Maverick doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

For better traction, the Canyon has larger standard tires than the Maverick (255/55R20 vs. 225/65R17). The Canyon AT4’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Maverick (265/65R17 vs. 235/65R17).

The Canyon Short Box Denali Crew Cab’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 55 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Maverick’s optional 60 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Canyon Short Box Denali Crew Cab has standard 20-inch wheels. The Maverick’s largest wheels are only 18-inches.

The GMC Canyon’s wheels have 6 lugs for longer wheel bearing life, less chance of rotor warping and greater strength. The Ford Maverick only has 5 wheel lugs per wheel.

The Canyon has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The Maverick doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

To almost totally eliminate engine vibration in the passenger area, the Canyon has liquid-filled engine mounts. The liquid helps further dampen engine harshness. The Maverick uses conventional solid rubber engine mounts.

The GMC Canyon offers an optional EZ-Lift and Lower, which prevents the heavy tailgate from falling with a crash and causing injury. It allows adults and children to easily open and close the tailgate with one hand to better facilitate loading and unloading. The Ford Maverick doesn’t offer a tailgate assist.

The GMC Canyon has a standard CornerStep, which allows for much easier access to the cargo area. The Ford Maverick doesn’t offer a rear cargo step.

Both the Canyon and Maverick have bed indentations that accommodate 2x4’s for two-tiered loading, but the Canyon also has indentations to separate the cargo box into three different sections length-wise.

The engine in the Canyon is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the Maverick. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.
