The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tests front crash prevention systems. With a score of 6 points, IIHS rates the Automatic Emergency Braking optional in the Sierra Limited as “Superior.” The Silverado Limited scores only 1 point and is rated only “Basic.”

Both the Sierra Limited and the Silverado Limited have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available four-wheel drive, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

For its top level performance in all IIHS frontal, side, rear impact and roof-crush tests, and with its optional front crash prevention system, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Sierra Limited the rating of “Top Pick” for 2017, a rating granted to only 212 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Silverado Limited was last qualified as a “Top Pick” in 2016.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that GMC vehicles are more reliable than Chevrolet vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks GMC 1 place higher in reliability than Chevrolet.

The Sierra 1500 Limited Short Bed AT4 Crew Cab executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 2.3 seconds quicker than the Silverado 1500 Limited Short Bed LT Trail Boss Crew Cab (27.7 seconds @ .73 average G’s vs. 30 seconds @ .55 average G’s).

The GMC Sierra Limited may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 100 to 200 pounds less than the Chevrolet Silverado Limited.

The Sierra Limited Crew Cab shortbed has a larger cargo box than the Silverado Limited Crew Cab shortbed (63.9 vs. 62.9 cubic feet). The Sierra Limited Crew Cab longbed has a larger cargo box than the Silverado Limited Crew Cab longbed (72.7 vs. 71.7 cubic feet).

The Sierra Limited has a standard center folding armrest for the driver and front passenger. A center armrest helps combat driver fatigue. The Silverado Limited Work Truck doesn’t offer a front seat center armrest.

Insurance will cost less for the Sierra Limited owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Sierra Limited will cost $210 less than the Silverado Limited over a five-year period.
