The Cooper Clubman has a standard PostCrash iBrake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Terrain doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Both the Cooper Clubman and the Terrain have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras and available front parking sensors.

The Cooper Clubman comes with a full 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Terrain’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 14,000 miles sooner.

The Cooper Clubman’s corrosion warranty is 6 years and unlimited miles longer than the Terrain’s (12/unlimited vs. 6/100,000).

MINI pays for scheduled maintenance on the Cooper Clubman for 3 years and 36,000 miles. MINI will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. GMC only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the Terrain.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that MINI vehicles are more reliable than GMC vehicles. J.D. Power ranks MINI 17th in reliability. With 18 more problems per 100 vehicles, GMC is ranked 25th.

The Cooper Clubman S’ standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder produces 19 more horsepower (189 vs. 170) and 3 lbs.-ft. more torque (206 vs. 203) than the Terrain’s 1.5 turbo 4-cylinder. The JCW Clubman’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder produces 131 more horsepower (301 vs. 170) and 128 lbs.-ft. more torque (331 vs. 203) than the Terrain’s 1.5 turbo 4-cylinder.

On the EPA test cycle the Cooper Clubman gets better mileage than the Terrain:

Regenerative brakes improve the Cooper Clubman’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The Terrain doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

The Cooper Clubman offers a manual transmission for better acceleration, control and sportiness. The Terrain doesn’t offer a manual transmission.

The Cooper Clubman offers an available sequential manual gearbox (SMG). With no clutch pedal to worry about and a fully automatic mode, an SMG is much more efficient than a conventional automatic but just as easy to drive. The Terrain doesn’t offer an SMG.

The Cooper Clubman uses gas struts to support the hood for easier service access. The Terrain uses a prop rod to support its heavy hood. J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that MINI service is better than GMC. J.D. Power ranks MINI 9th in service department satisfaction (above the industry average). With an 8% lower rating, GMC is ranked 15th.

If the windows are left open on the Cooper Clubman the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Terrain can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Cooper Clubman has a standard locking fuel door with a remote release located convenient to the driver. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank. The Terrain doesn’t offer a locking fuel door.

The Cooper Clubman’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Terrain’s manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.
