Compare the2022 Chevrolet BoltVS 2021 Porsche Taycan

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the Bolt are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The Taycan doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the Bolt’s optional cross-path warning system uses sensors in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The Taycan doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.

Both the Bolt and the Taycan have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, available blind spot warning systems and around view monitors.

For its top level performance in IIHS driver-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, rear impact and roof-crush tests, with its optional front crash prevention system, its “Acceptable” rating in the new passenger-side small overlap crash test, and its headlight’s “Acceptable” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Bolt the rating of “Top Pick” for 2019, a rating granted to only 160 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Taycan has not been tested, yet.

Chevrolet’s powertrain warranty covers the Bolt 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Porsche covers the Taycan. Any repair needed on the motor, lithium batteries, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the Taycan ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are over 15 times as many Chevrolet dealers as there are Porsche dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Bolt’s warranty.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Bolt’s reliability 60 points higher than the Taycan.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2020 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Chevrolet vehicles are better in initial quality than Porsche vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Chevrolet third in initial quality, above the industry average. With 45 more problems per 100 vehicles, Porsche is ranked 24th, below the industry average.

The Bolt’s electric motor produces 12 lbs.-ft. more torque (266 vs. 254) than the Taycan’s standard electric motor. The Bolt’s electric motor produces 3 lbs.-ft. more torque (266 vs. 263) than the Taycan Performance Plus’ optional electric motor.

On the EPA test cycle the Bolt gets better fuel mileage than the Taycan:

The Bolt’s maximum EPA estimated driving range is 259 miles on a full charge, 14% further than the Taycan 4S Performance Plus’ 227-mile range and 29% further than the Taycan Turbo S’ 201-mile range.

The Bolt’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 50 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Taycan’s standard 55 series front tires.

The Bolt has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The Taycan doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

Having a flat tire is dangerous, inconvenient and expensive. The self-sealing tires standard on the Bolt can automatically seal most punctures up to 3/16 of an inch, effectively preventing most flat tires. The Taycan doesn’t offer self-sealing tires.

The Chevrolet Bolt may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 1000 to 1550 pounds less than the Porsche Taycan.

The Bolt is 2 feet, 8.2 inches shorter than the Taycan, making the Bolt easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

For excellent aerodynamics, the Bolt has standard flush composite headlights. The Taycan has recessed headlights that spoil its aerodynamic shape and create extra drag.

The Bolt has 5.9 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Taycan (93.9 vs. 88).

The Bolt has 1.9 inches more front headroom, 2.5 inches more front legroom, 1.1 inches more rear headroom and 3.4 inches more rear legroom than the Taycan.

The Bolt has a larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Taycan with its rear seat up (16.6 vs. 14.3 cubic feet).

The Bolt’s power window, power lock, power mirror and cruise control switches are lit from behind, making them plainly visible and easier to operate at night. The Taycan’s cruise control switches are unlit, making them difficult to find at night and operate safely.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Bolt has a standard rear wiper. The Taycan doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

Consumer Reports rated the Bolt’s headlight performance “Very Good,” a higher rating than the Taycan’s headlights, which were rated “Fair.”

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the Bolt has standard extendable sun visors. The Taycan doesn’t offer extendable visors.

Insurance will cost less for the Bolt owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Bolt will cost $11005 to $13400 less than the Taycan over a five-year period.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Chevrolet Bolt will be $98113 to $122531 less than for the Porsche Taycan.
