The Chevrolet Trax has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The CR-V doesn’t offer knee airbags.

Both the Trax and the CR-V have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available all wheel drive, blind spot warning systems, rear parking sensors and rear cross-path warning.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Chevrolet Trax is safer than the Honda CR-V:

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the Trax has a standard 525-amp battery. The CR-V’s 410-amp battery isn’t as powerful.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Trax third among small suvs in their 2020 Initial Quality Study. The CR-V isn’t in the top three in its category.

Power and Associates’ 2021 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Chevrolet vehicles are more reliable than Honda vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Chevrolet 12th in reliability, above the industry average. With 30 more problems per 100 vehicles, Honda is ranked 27th.

The Trax has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The CR-V’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

The Trax has vehicle speed sensitive variable-assist power steering, for low-effort parking, better control at highway speeds and during hard cornering, and a better feel of the road. The CR-V doesn’t offer variable-assist power steering.

The Trax handles at .80 G’s, while the CR-V Touring AWD pulls only .79 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

For better maneuverability, the Trax LS’ turning circle is 2 feet tighter than the CR-V’s (35.4 feet vs. 37.4 feet). The Trax LT’s turning circle is .7 feet tighter than the CR-V’s (36.7 feet vs. 37.4 feet).

The Chevrolet Trax may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 200 to 300 pounds less than the Honda CR-V.

The Trax is 1 foot, 2.5 inches shorter than the CR-V, making the Trax easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The front step up height for the Trax is 2.2 inches lower than the CR-V (16.8” vs. 19”). The Trax’s rear step up height is 1.2 inches lower than the CR-V’s (16.8” vs. 18”).

The power windows standard on both the Trax and the CR-V have locks to prevent small children from operating them. When the lock on the Trax is engaged the driver can still operate all of the windows, for instance to close one opened by a child. The CR-V prevents the driver from operating the other windows just as it does the other passengers.

The Trax’s front and rear power windows all lower with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The CR-V’s standard power windows’ passenger windows don’t open automatically. The CR-V EX/EX-L/Touring’s rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to lower them fully.

The Trax’s variable intermittent wipers have an adjustable delay to allow the driver to choose a setting that best clears the windshield during light rain or mist. The CR-V LX’s standard fixed intermittent wipers only have one fixed delay setting, so the driver will have to manually switch them between slow and intermittent.

The Trax LT has a 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The CR-V doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Trax is less expensive to operate than the CR-V because typical repairs cost much less on the Trax than the CR-V, including $313 less for a starter, $242 less for fuel injection and $12 less for front struts.
