Compare the2022 Chevrolet TraxVS 2021 Cadillac XT4

Both the Trax and the XT4 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available all wheel drive, blind spot warning systems, rear parking sensors and rear cross-path warning.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Chevrolet Trax is safer than the Cadillac XT4:

For its top level performance in all IIHS frontal, side, rear impact and roof-crush tests, and with its optional front crash prevention system, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Trax the rating of “Top Pick” for 2016, a rating granted to only 219 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The XT4 has not been fully tested, yet.

There are over 3 times as many Chevrolet dealers as there are Cadillac dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Trax’s warranty.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Trax’s reliability 21 points higher than the XT4.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2020 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Chevrolet vehicles are better in initial quality than Cadillac vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Chevrolet third in initial quality, above the industry average. With 21 more problems per 100 vehicles, Cadillac is ranked 14th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Chevrolet vehicles are more reliable than Cadillac vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Chevrolet 4 places higher in reliability than Cadillac.

On the EPA test cycle the Trax gets better fuel mileage than the XT4:

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Chevrolet Trax uses regular unleaded gasoline. The XT4 requires premium for maximum efficiency, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

The Trax stops much shorter than the XT4:

For better maneuverability, the Trax LS’ turning circle is 2.6 feet tighter than the XT4’s (35.4 feet vs. 38 feet). The Trax LT’s turning circle is 1.3 feet tighter than the XT4’s (36.7 feet vs. 38 feet).

The Chevrolet Trax may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 550 to 600 pounds less than the Cadillac XT4.

The Trax is 1 foot, 1.5 inches shorter than the XT4, making the Trax easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The Trax has .2 inches more front headroom, .6 inches more rear headroom and .9 inches more rear hip room than the XT4.

A low lift-over cargo hatch design makes loading and unloading the Trax easier. The Trax’s cargo hatch lift-over height is 28.8 inches, while the XT4’s liftover is 30.5 inches.

The Trax’s front and rear power windows all lower with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The XT4’s rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to open them fully.

The Trax LT has a 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The XT4 doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

Insurance will cost less for the Trax owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Trax will cost $395 to $1840 less than the XT4 over a five-year period.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Trax is less expensive to operate than the XT4 because it costs $482 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost much less on the Trax than the XT4, including $21 less for a water pump, $146 less for a muffler, $30 less for front brake pads, $103 less for a starter, $326 less for fuel injection and $14 less for a timing belt/chain.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Chevrolet Trax will be $12522 to $13295 less than for the Cadillac XT4.
