In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the Wagoneer are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The Land Cruiser doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The Wagoneer has standard Park Assist with Rear Stop that uses rear sensors to monitor and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a rear collision. The Land Cruiser doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

A passive infrared night vision system optional on the Wagoneer Grand Wagoneer helps the driver to more easily detect people, animals or other objects in front of the vehicle at night. Using an infrared camera to detect heat, the system then displays the image on a monitor in the dashboard. The Land Cruiser doesn’t offer a night vision system.

Both the Wagoneer and the Land Cruiser have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, available all wheel drive, around view monitors and driver alert monitors.

Warranty

Jeep pays for scheduled maintenance on the Wagoneer for 3 years and -25000 miles longer than Toyota pays for maintenance for the Land Cruiser (5/unlimited vs. 2/25000).

There are almost 2 times as many Jeep dealers as there are Toyota dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Wagoneer’s warranty.

Reliability

The Jeep Wagoneer’s engines use a cast iron block for durability, while the Land Cruiser’s engine uses an aluminum block. Aluminum engine blocks are much more prone to warp and crack at high temperatures than cast iron.

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the Wagoneer has a standard 730-amp battery. The Land Cruiser’s 650-amp battery isn’t as powerful.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Jeep vehicles are better in initial quality than Toyota vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Jeep above average in initial quality. With 8 more problems per 100 vehicles, Toyota is rated lower.

Engine

The Wagoneer’s standard 5.7 V8 hybrid produces 11 more horsepower (392 vs. 381) and 3 lbs.-ft. more torque (404 vs. 401) than the Land Cruiser’s 5.7 DOHC V8. The Grand Wagoneer’s standard 6.4 V8 produces 90 more horsepower (471 vs. 381) and 54 lbs.-ft. more torque (455 vs. 401) than the Land Cruiser’s 5.7 DOHC V8.

As tested in Car and Driver the Grand Wagoneer 6.4 V8 is faster than the Toyota Land Cruiser:

On the EPA test cycle the Wagoneer gets better mileage than the Land Cruiser:

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the Wagoneer’s fuel efficiency. The Land Cruiser doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

Regenerative brakes improve the Wagoneer (except Grand Wagoneer)’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The Land Cruiser doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

In heavy traffic or at stop lights the Wagoneer’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. If the conditions warrant or the driver wishes, the system can be manually disabled at any time for the duration of a trip. The Land Cruiser doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

The Wagoneer has 1.9 gallons more fuel capacity than the Land Cruiser (26.5 vs. 24.6 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Wagoneer has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Land Cruiser doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Wagoneer’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Land Cruiser:

Tires and Wheels

The Wagoneer’s optional tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Land Cruiser’s 60 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Wagoneer offers optional 22-inch wheels. The Land Cruiser’s largest wheels are only 18-inches.

The Jeep Wagoneer’s wheels have 6 lugs for longer wheel bearing life, less chance of rotor warping and greater strength. The Toyota Land Cruiser only has 5 wheel lugs per wheel.

The Wagoneer has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The Land Cruiser doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

Suspension and Handling

For superior ride and handling, the Jeep Wagoneer has fully independent front and rear suspensions. An independent suspension allows the wheels to follow the road at the best angle for gripping the pavement, without compromising ride comfort. The Toyota Land Cruiser has a solid rear axle, with a non-independent rear suspension.

The Wagoneer offers an optional driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The Land Cruiser’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The Wagoneer offers an optional automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Wagoneer’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The Land Cruiser doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Wagoneer’s wheelbase is 10.8 inches longer than on the Land Cruiser (123 inches vs. 112.2 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Wagoneer is 3.7 inches wider in the front and 3.7 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the Land Cruiser.

For better maneuverability, the Wagoneer’s turning circle is .7 feet tighter than the Land Cruiser’s (38 feet vs. 38.7 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Wagoneer Air Suspension has a 1.1 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Land Cruiser (10 vs. 8.9 inches), allowing the Wagoneer to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Chassis

The front grille of the Wagoneer uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Land Cruiser doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The Wagoneer uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The Land Cruiser doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

Passenger Space

The Wagoneer has 35.8 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Land Cruiser (179.2 vs. 143.4).

Cargo Capacity

The Wagoneer’s cargo area provides more volume than the Land Cruiser.

Pressing a button automatically lowers the Wagoneer’s optional second row seats and pressing a button automatically lowers or raises the Wagoneer’s third row seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The Land Cruiser doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

The Wagoneer’s liftgate lifts up in one piece, completely out of the way of loading and unloading, while sheltering the cargo loading area. The Land Cruiser’s tailgate’s top part raises up, but the bottom part lowers, getting in the way of loading and making an uneven surface for sliding cargo.

To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Wagoneer’s liftgate can be opened and closed just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The Land Cruiser doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its tailgate, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.

Payload and Towing

Maximum trailer towing in the Toyota Land Cruiser is limited to 8100 pounds. The Wagoneer offers up to a 10,000 lbs. towing capacity.

The Wagoneer has a higher standard payload capacity than the Land Cruiser (1510 vs. 1320 lbs.).

The Wagoneer has a much higher maximum payload capacity than the Land Cruiser (1560 vs. 1320 lbs.).

Ergonomics

The Wagoneer has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The Land Cruiser doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the Land Cruiser, the Wagoneer Grand has a passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position, foot pedal distance, outside mirror angle and radio stations and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The Wagoneer offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Land Cruiser doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The Wagoneer’s power parking brake sets with one touch and releases with one touch or automatically. The Land Cruiser has a lever-type parking brake that has to be strenuously raised to engage properly. It has to be lifted up more and a button depressed to release it.

The power windows standard on both the Wagoneer and the Land Cruiser have locks to prevent small children from operating them. When the lock on the Wagoneer is engaged the driver can still operate all of the windows, for instance to close one opened by a child. The Land Cruiser prevents the driver from operating the other windows just as it does the other passengers.

The Wagoneer’s power window, power lock, power mirror and cruise control switches are lit from behind, making them plainly visible and easier to operate at night. The Land Cruiser’s cruise control switches are unlit, making them difficult to find at night and operate safely.

To help drivers avoid possible obstacles, the Wagoneer offers optional cornering lights to illuminate around corners when the turn signals are activated. The Land Cruiser doesn’t offer cornering lights.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Wagoneer to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Land Cruiser doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

The Wagoneer’s power mirror controls are mounted on the armrest for easy access. The Land Cruiser’s power mirror controls are on the dash where they are possibly hidden by the steering wheel and are awkward to manipulate.

The Wagoneer has standard front air conditioned seats and the Wagoneer Grand Wagoneer offers them optionally in the second row. This keeps the passengers comfortable and takes the sting out of hot seats in summer. The Land Cruiser doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats for the second row.

The Wagoneer offers optional massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the Land Cruiser.

The Wagoneer’s optional ParkSense Automated Parking can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling the transmission and speed with the brake pedal. With its available fully controlled system, the driver just activates it and it parks autonomously, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The Land Cruiser doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Model Availability

The Wagoneer is available in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The Land Cruiser doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.
