Both the Eclipse Cross and the XT4 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available all wheel drive, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is safer than the Cadillac XT4:

Mitsubishi’s powertrain warranty covers the Eclipse Cross 4 years and 30,000 miles longer than Cadillac covers the XT4. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the XT4 ends after only 6 years or 70,000 miles.

The Eclipse Cross’ corrosion warranty is 1 year longer than the XT4’s (7 vs. 6 years).

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Eclipse Cross’ reliability 30 points higher than the XT4.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2020 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Mitsubishi vehicles are better in initial quality than Cadillac vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Mitsubishi 6th in initial quality, above the industry average. With 14 more problems per 100 vehicles, Cadillac is ranked 14th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Mitsubishi vehicles are more reliable than Cadillac vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Mitsubishi 1 place higher in reliability than Cadillac.

On the EPA test cycle the Eclipse Cross gets better fuel mileage than the XT4:

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross uses regular unleaded gasoline. The XT4 requires premium for maximum efficiency, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

The Eclipse Cross has a standard continuously variable transmission (CVT). With no “steps” between gears, it can keep the engine at the most efficient speed for fuel economy, or keep it at its peak horsepower indefinitely for maximum acceleration. The XT4 doesn’t offer a CVT.

The Eclipse Cross stops shorter than the XT4:

For better maneuverability, the Eclipse Cross AWD’s turning circle is 3.2 feet tighter than the XT4’s (34.8 feet vs. 38 feet). The Eclipse Cross’ turning circle is 3 feet tighter than the XT4’s (35 feet vs. 38 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Eclipse Cross has a 1.7 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the XT4 (8.5 vs. 6.8 inches), allowing the Eclipse Cross to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 400 pounds less than the Cadillac XT4.

The Eclipse Cross has .1 inches more front headroom and 2.2 inches more rear hip room than the XT4.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Eclipse Cross’ rear seats recline. The XT4’s rear seats don’t recline.

The Eclipse Cross has a larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the XT4 with its rear seat up (23.4 vs. 22.5 cubic feet). The Eclipse Cross has a larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the XT4 with its rear seat folded (50.1 vs. 48.9 cubic feet).

The Eclipse Cross SEL’s front and rear power windows all open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The XT4’s rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to open or close them fully.

The Eclipse Cross has a standard locking fuel door with a remote release located convenient to the driver. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank. The XT4 doesn’t offer a locking fuel door.

Insurance will cost less for the Eclipse Cross owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Eclipse Cross will cost $535 to $1815 less than the XT4 over a five-year period.

The Eclipse Cross will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the Eclipse Cross will retain 42.72% to 44.29% of its original price after five years, while the XT4 only retains 41.8% to 41.95%.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross will be $12676 to $14203 less than for the Cadillac XT4.
