For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Honda Odyssey are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Buick Enclave doesn’t offer height-adjustable front seat belts.

The Honda Odyssey has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Enclave doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The Odyssey has a standard Whiplash Mitigation Front Seat Design, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Whiplash Mitigation Front Seat Design system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The Enclave doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

Both the Odyssey and the Enclave have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available blind spot warning systems, rear parking sensors and rear cross-path warning.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Honda Odyssey is safer than the Buick Enclave:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Honda Odyssey is safer than the Buick Enclave:

Warranty

The Odyssey’s corrosion warranty is unlimited miles longer than the Enclave’s (unlimited vs. 100,000 miles).

Reliability

The engine in the Odyssey has a single overhead cam for simplicity. The engine in the Enclave has dual overhead cams, which add to the number of moving parts and the complexity of the cylinder heads.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Odyssey second among minivans in their 2020 Initial Quality Study. The Enclave isn’t in the top three in its category.

Engine

As tested in Motor Trend the Honda Odyssey is faster than the Buick Enclave:

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Odyssey gets better fuel mileage than the Enclave FWD (19 city/28 hwy vs. 18 city/26 hwy).

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the Odyssey’s fuel efficiency. The Enclave doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

Transmission

A 10-speed automatic is standard on the Honda Odyssey, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a nine-speed automatic is available for the Enclave.

Brakes and Stopping

The Odyssey stops shorter than the Enclave:

Tires and Wheels

The Odyssey’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 60 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Enclave’s standard 65 series tires.

Passenger Space

The Odyssey offers optional seating for 8 passengers; the Enclave can only carry 7.

The Odyssey has .7 inches more front shoulder room, 2 inches more rear legroom, 7.1 inches more rear hip room, .7 inches more third row headroom, 4.6 inches more third row legroom and 2.7 inches more third row shoulder room than the Enclave.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Odyssey’s middle and third row seats recline. The Enclave’s third row seats don’t recline.

Cargo Capacity

The Odyssey’s cargo area provides more volume than the Enclave.

A low lift-over cargo hatch design makes loading and unloading the Odyssey easier. The Odyssey’s cargo hatch lift-over height is 22.5 inches, while the Enclave’s liftover is 31.2 inches.

The Odyssey has a standard One-Motion Magic Seat third row seat, which folds flat into the floor. This completely clears a very large cargo area quickly. The Enclave doesn’t offer seats that fold into the floor.

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the Odyssey. The Enclave doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

Towing

The Odyssey’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Enclave’s (3500 vs. 1500 pounds).

Ergonomics

The Odyssey’s standard front power windows open or close with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The Enclave’s front passenger window doesn’t close automatically. The Odyssey EX/EX-L/Touring/Elite’s front and rear power windows all open or close with one touch of the switches.

The Odyssey has a standard locking fuel door with a remote release located convenient to the driver. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank. The Enclave doesn’t offer a locking fuel door.

The Odyssey Elite’s standard wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically according to the amount of rainfall on the windshield. The Enclave’s manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducts detailed tests on headlights for their range both straight ahead and in curves and to be certain they don’t exceed acceptable amounts of glare to oncoming drivers. The Odyssey’s available headlights were rated “Acceptable” by the IIHS, while the Enclave’s headlights are rated “Marginal.”

Economic Advantages

Insurance will cost less for the Odyssey owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Odyssey will cost $600 less than the Enclave over a five-year period.

The Odyssey will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the Odyssey will retain 47.19% to 50.84% of its original price after five years, while the Enclave only retains 33.96% to 37.87%.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Odyssey is less expensive to operate than the Enclave because it costs $673 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost much less on the Odyssey than the Enclave, including $220 less for a water pump, $135 less for front brake pads, $227 less for fuel injection, $102 less for a fuel pump, $11 less for front struts, $443 less for a timing belt/chain and $691 less for a power steering pump.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Honda Odyssey will be $11448 to $13110 less than for the Buick Enclave.

Recommendations

The Car Book by Jack Gillis recommends the Honda Odyssey, based on economy, maintenance, safety and complaint levels.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Odyssey first among minivans in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The Enclave isn’t in the top three in its category.
