Both the 4 Series Gran Coupe and the XE have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, available all wheel drive, crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems and around view monitors.

The 4 Series Gran Coupe’s corrosion warranty is 6 years longer than the XE’s (12 vs. 6 years).

There are over 2 times as many BMW dealers as there are Jaguar dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the 4 Series Gran Coupe’s warranty.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2018 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that BMW vehicles are more reliable than Jaguar vehicles. J.D. Power ranks BMW 8th in reliability, above the industry average. With 32 more problems per 100 vehicles, Jaguar is ranked 20th.

On the EPA test cycle the 440i Gran Coupe gets better fuel mileage than the XE:

The 4 Series Gran Coupe has a gallon more fuel capacity than the XE Diesel’s standard fuel tank (15.8 vs. 14.8 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe higher (3 to 7 out of 10) than the Jaguar XE (1 to 7). This means the 4 Series Gran Coupe produces up to 47 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the XE every 15,000 miles.

The 4 Series Gran Coupe’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs standard on the XE are solid, not vented.

The 4 Series Gran Coupe stops much shorter than the XE:

The 4 Series Gran Coupe’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the XE’s standard 50 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the 4 Series Gran Coupe has standard 18-inch wheels. Smaller 17-inch wheels are standard on the XE.

Changing a flat tire near traffic can be dangerous and inconvenient. The run-flat tires available on the 4 Series Gran Coupe can be driven up to 50 miles without any air pressure, allowing you to drive to a service station for a repair. The XE doesn’t offer run-flat tires.

The 430i Gran Coupe handles at .89 G’s, while the XE R-Sport AWD pulls only .88 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The 4 Series Gran Coupe is 5.5 inches narrower than the XE, making the 4 Series Gran Coupe easier to handle and maneuver in traffic.

As tested by Car and Driver, the interior of the 430i Gran Coupe xDrive is quieter than the XE R-Sport AWD:

The 4 Series Gran Coupe has 2.9 inches more front headroom and .7 inches more front legroom than the XE.

The 4 Series Gran Coupe has a larger trunk with its rear seat up than the XE (17 vs. 14.7 cubic feet).

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that BMW service is better than Jaguar. J.D. Power ranks BMW 8th in service department satisfaction (above the industry average). With a 16% lower rating, Jaguar is ranked 15th.

The 4 Series Gran Coupe has a standard locking fuel door with a remote release located convenient to the driver. A locking fuel door helps prevent vandalism, such as sugar in the tank and fuel theft. The XE doesn’t offer a locking fuel door.

The BMW 4 Series comes in coupe, convertible and four door hatchback bodystyles; the Jaguar XE isn’t available as a coupe or convertible.

The 4 Series Gran Coupe will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the 4 Series Gran Coupe will retain 44.99% to 47.5% of its original price after five years, while the XE only retains 39.2% to 42.64%.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the 4 Series Gran Coupe third among compact premium cars in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The XE isn’t in the top three.

The 4 Series was chosen as one of Car and Driver’s “Top Ten” in 2014. The XE has never been a Car and Driver “Top Ten” pick.

The 4 Series was chosen as one of Automobile Magazine’s “All Stars” in 2014. The XE has never been an “All Star.”
